In the late seventies Sweethearts was a cafe where rock 'n roll folk
gathered in the early hours after a gig. Band members, roadies, band
moles, everyone gathered there to eat and drink (coffee and
brandivino) the hangover away before bed ... "Speed chivers melt away"
hair of the dog if you knew how to ask.
Toorak cowboys often turned up and tried to act cool and be part of
the crowd but they always looked too cool. Sweethearts was for burnt
out ragers not blokes with hair cuts from Marinis. They never
understood.
Anne-Maria is a real person, she was more like an institution, she
knew everyone, who was real, who was not.
Don Walker immortalised the place in a song, thanks mate.

The lyric:
Campbell lane
Through the window, curtain rain
Long night gone, yellow day
Speed shivers melt away
Six o'clock I'm goin' down
Coffee's hot and the toast is brown
Hey streetsweeper, clear my way
Sweethearts breakfast is the best in town
Oh-oh, Breakfast at Sweethearts . . .
Hey, Anne-Maria
It's always good to see her
She don't smile or flirt
She just wears that mini-skirt
Drunks come in
Paper bag, Brandivino
Dreams fly away
As she pulls another cappucino
Six o'clock I'm goin' down
Coffee's hot and the toast is brown
Hey streetsweeper, clear my way
Sweethearts breakfast is the best in town
Oh-oh, Breakfast at Sweethearts . . .
The late great Steve Prestwich on drums. He had developed into a fine
guitarist and singer in recent years. A very sad loss to Aussie music!
Interestingly the cover photo for "Breakfast at Sweethearts" was at the
opposite end of the scale from the real "Sweethearts", being taken at the
Marble Bar at the Sydney Hilton.
Very OT, but a very pleasing post.

11 May 2011
After the original Sweethearts from the song burnt down, they moved
across the road.
As a teenager, in the 80s, and a tragic Cold Chisel fan, my mates and I
had "breakfast at Sweethearts" regularly after a big Friday or Saturday
night in town.
Great memories. :)

Er, Sweethearts was in Kings Cross so there wouldn't have been too many
Toorak cowboys. Maybe Vaucluse.
Yeah, it was cool sorta like Joeys in Melbourne.
Same breed ;-) different name.
beers,
I'd be sorta disappointed if it was ...
beers,
Not sure, but I think the real waitress' name was actually Anne. And the
Maria was just added to work with the lyric.
