Martin Brlundle....

here is why (from my point of view) :

1) he knows his stuff...doesn't talk for the whole race..you actually can
enjoy
some racing without some comments...

2) he has a great sense of humor...

my wish (I know it won't work) is:

Murray Walker and James Hunt. Ying and Yang. Sweet and Sour. Balanced each

Hands down, Bob Varsha and Derek Bell.
Varsha has a hard earned (at least in F1) intuitive knack for seeing into a situation. Almost always calls it on the first shot no matter how weird the situation. A wicked sense of humor, "Nakano comes in for what must be his first ever Formula 1 pit stop." In Shinji's 2nd or 3rd season, no less. And Derek Bell is completely intolerant of everyone. Having seen him drive an IMSA mobile I believe he has the right.

Watson blows like mad. He's already killed one of my dogs with his droning.

BBC1 had THE best F1 coverage until last season.

No GP is the same without hearing Murray Walker commentate.

James Hunt was by far the best straightman to Murray's accidental
comedy. Brundle is a close second.

I dunno about Varsha and Bell, but at least Watson knows what it's like

Watson is marginal, I respected Bell a great deal from his sports
car days, but I'm rapidly loosing all respect for the man. He's been
around and done and seen a few things, but DAMN does he go ON and ON.
Varsha was good, kept it simple, didn't add any BS, bring him back.

I miss Jackie Stewart from my youth on ESPN (when that's all there
was!), can't remember if he was really that great at commentating, I was
pretty new to it all then.

BTW, does anybody remember way back when during an ESPN broadcast
before the race they introduced a bunch of famous international F1
broadcasters as "the Jackie Stewart of .....?"

I agree. I usually like Varsha (he's good with facts, not so much a

Watson just won't shut up!!! And most of what he talks about has nothing to
do with the race at hand. One race last year, he called Sterling Moss (in the
middle of the race -- prearranged I believe). They then proceeded to talk
about what the Mosses were going to have for dinner because Mrs. Moss is such
a wonderfull cook. This went on for about 20 minutes! (Of course, maybe ESPN
thought the race would be so boring, anything might help us all get through
it. :-)

I have to say I kind of liked Watson (is he back?) and when compared to the
ITV commentary last season which was more professional I still think Watson
was/is more entertaining.

> BBC1 had THE best F1 coverage until last season.

That I have never seen so I can't comment on BBC.

However I have to say, not only as a finn but of all the F1 coverages I've
seen the absolutely most hilarious and entertaining commentator is Matti
Kyllonen of the finnish MTV3. Not only does he talk all the time, off-topic,
he gets over excited and his stupidity is pure genius.

Some of the best historical sessions include commentary where former WC Keke
Rosberberg keeps correcting him - there is even a lot of collections of his
commentry on the net, I don't know if anybody has translated them though.

Watson is nowhere even near to his level of babbling - and worst of all he
knows a little bit about racing...

Well I've heard:

Walker & Hunt
Walker & Brundle
Watson & Kalff
Watson & Edwards
Watson & Bell

And I rate them in the order I've placed them. I heard the ESPN2
coverage last season and I don't think Watson is worse than he used to
be, if anything he stays more on topic. I think it might be his accent
- which let's face it - isn't most people's idea of easy listening.
Bell I really don't like, however.
