Often you will see drivers trying to protect their ears with their hands.
Mechanics certainly do, and not just F1 mechanics. In the days when
it wasn't "cool" to wear ear defenders, I didn't, and now I have a
problem with separation of different noises - so I find it difficult
to hear conversation with a lot of background noise - for instance at
parties.
"You'll always find me in the kitchen at parties" for a very good

You'll have to speak up a bit as I couldn't quite hear that first bit.

That is protection in case one of the low-flying Schumacher duo spring
a surprise attack.

The drivers wear earplugs to protect their ears, I didn't think it was
THAT loud when I went to Silverstone.

Of course the drivers suffer from hearing
difficulties and thinking difficulties too,
this has been displayed 2 years running at
the Autralian GP.
First there was Alesi running out of fuel in
97, and then there was Hakkinen 2 weeks
ago.

I have for sale genuine sets of Goodyear foam earplugs in a plastic case
on a dangly chain from the 1985 (insert race of your choice) Gp and if
required they can be signed by any F1 driver (alive or dead).
cost just 10000 US dollars or the change in your pocket.

Come on you Tykes.
Many "educated" and sophisticated musician use this
to prevent early deafness. If you ever see the drivers
or musicians (while on stage ex - Sarah McLachlan)
with wires coming out of their ears, this is it.
BTW, a fully revving F1 engine from 6 ft is approx. 120 db
loud. It only takes a few seconds/minutes to induce
PERMANENT hearing loss.
Also, the canal "phones" I refer to are also high quality
music "headphones" and they come with ear sealers (both
plastic and foam) that afford 35 db of ambient noise
isolation! They are considered "as good as it gets" and
use a standard eq curve to achieve a less "in the head"
sound.

Were you standing ext to a running car that was revving?
In an open air area and with some distance the decibels will decrease
massively!

Once on the move I would think that wind noise would be the biggest
factor. Believe me, this can get to painfull levels.

Back in '96 I had the luck of being invited by one of McLaren's sponsors to
attend as VIP guest at the Monza GP (yes, you can be jealous ....)
On sunday morning we could all visit the pitlane and me and a collegue of mine
could even enter the pit box. We were given earplugs and told to put them in.
With a big smile on my face I said : Hey, I'm a guitarplayer and *nothing* can
be louder than a fully cranked guitar amplifier, so don't worry.
Then the engines were fired up .... us standing only a few feet away.
I almost tore my pants apart trying to grab the earplugs ... ;-)

Just remember the Police Control Building at the end of the M11. I went
past there at 100 one morning and past Mr Plod just as he was joining
the motorway. Quickly dropped back to 70-75 :-)
