I've wondered this for a long time, but everytime I see race teams
changing tires in a pitstop, those tires look pretty light. I know that
any regular road car tires I've handled require two hands to lift
usually, even the smallest ones. So what are race tires and rims
supposed to weigh? Are the rims carbon fibre too?

Yousuf Khan,
If you watch NASCAR tire changers:

Here's info on 2002 F1 tire weights:

Can't find anything on wheel weights, but you could buy one and weigh it!

In article <505b73ad$1...@news.bnb-lp.com>,
From f1opinion.com: "In the 90?s the wheel and tires weighed about 32
pounds for a rear and 25 pounds for a front. My guess given improvements
in casting processes, FEA, and machining techniques and the tire
manufactures quest to save weight, my guess is that todays wheel and
tires are in the 28 to 30 pound range for rears and 20 to 22 pounds for
fronts."

I have no knowledge about the accuracy of this estimate, but it seems at
least reasonable.

According to the above, they say a road car wheel weighs about 11kg, and
so does a race car tire, at least back in 2002. I can't see much reason
it would've come down significantly since then, so I can only assume
that these tire changers are extremely strong.

This is probably a stupid question, but aren't the fronts and backs the same
size now?

"The front tire must be between 305 and 355 mm wide, and the rear tyre must

Does this mean that Pirelli has to supply different widths to each team based on the width that they've chosen?

The specification is for the supplier, not the teams.
