Is F1 going down? The Drivers are not as good as they use to be. In the 70's
and 80's there used to be 5 or more drivers going for the title, now there
is only 2. If Senna, Prost and Mansell were still around Schucher and
Villeneuve would be never heard of. PLease send me your comments

Mansell? sure he was fun to watch, but not in the same league as Senna &
Prost.

I think I agree with you here. I only started watching F1 from France '91,
but from what I've seen on video, I wish I had watched it in the 80's
(even though I would have been a little kid then).
You mentioned just Schu and Villeneuve. I think Hill should be in that group
as well (just not the best :) ) and I think Fissi will be a future WC.
If Hill stays around for a little longer, and JV doesn't go back to CART
then we'll have 4 top drivers, which shouldn't be to bad.

Well I have to disagree with you. Since 1984 there have never really
been more than 3 drivers in contention for the WC. I have only been
following Grand Prix's since 1981 so I can't really comment on the 70's
though I think it was much the same.
Of course like everyone I would like to see more drivers in with a
chance of the WC and think that next year there will be maybe half a
dozen drivers with a chance of the title.
Mclaren are looking the fastest at the moment, Williams will be
upfront despite the loss of factory Renaults, Ferrari will again be
saying "next season we will be competitive", Jordan will certainly have
reached the dizzy heights of Grand prix victors with Damon driving and
I'm sure Prost and Benneton will be up there somewhere.
I CAN'T WAIT!

heh, I don't think so. F1 is ranked as the 2nd most popular sport in
the world, only behind football.

Oh yes, Prost and Mansell *are* still around, which means that Schui and
JV would/are around. You make a totally irrelevant and inaccurate
point.

It's not the drivers that are bringing down F1, it's the differances
between the teams. Panis would be up there if he drove for Jordan.

No, F1 is not going down...the drivers are still there but the equipment
has changed so much that it is not so much the driver anymore but what kind
of car he drives. Examples------

Mclaren = they have fantastic engines and drivers...yet little or no wins,
why? there car has no reliability. if you not have that then you have no
chance for a world title.

Ferrari = they have the 25 million dollar wonder..yet they still cannot
fully compete with William's.....why? the car is still not good
enough!!!!!! Ferrari is lucky that they competed this far, and that was
only because shumi is a brilliant driver. Case in point...look how
terrible Irvine is doing, if I was Ferrari I would shaft him too.

Jordan = again we have a situation of good drivers but not a good car.

William's = I am sorry to piss anyone off but here it goes...AVERAGE
drivers with brilliant cars, and that is the truth!!! If JV was not in a
William's he would not be in contention for the title...case closed. And
don't even try that CART bullshit on me because CART cannot even compare to
F!. Just ask Michael Andretti.

The drivers are all good but until you bring the equipment all into the
same category you will always have only certain teams winning and others
losing. Thank god that they banned traction control and other drivers aids
because only the teams with alot of money could have kept up with that.
Not the average team...they would have went broke. F1 is money..and don't
let anyone tell you it isn't, the more you have the more you will win and
that is it...period.

Better yet ask his father. CART & F1 Champion Mario Andretti.

Coulthard will be more competetive - Hill will help to make Jordan a real
challenger in '98 - Gian Carlo & Alexander Wurst will revive Benneton, a
new
manager also (Alesi & Berger, with due respect, were getting a tad to old)

Look forward to next season, remember it's in Bernie's interest also, he's
got
much more to lose (and to gain)than us.

MS, JV or Hill would NEVER score 9 or 8 victories during any year if
drivers
like you mentioned were around .

Unfortunatelly I see hondas blowing up every race - Damon't next year
will
be as difficult as this one.

Berger in Williams would not let M.Schumacher get close to the title!!!

After living 3 years in the US I got rid of european F1 arrogance and
respect CART just like F1. I still religiously tape F1 (never tape
CART),
but the balance is switching to my side of "the pond."

I don't think it's the drivers. It's the cars and the tracks. The cars
are so sensitive now that drivers can't overtake because the cars lose
all their downforce if they're too close to one another. The cars don't
slide on the track like they did in the 60's and 70's. I was watching a
film made in the the mid-60's and was amazed and how exciting it was to
just watch the cars sliding around the curves.

The new tracks are also boring. Tracks like Magny-Cours, Nurburgring,
Budapest, Jerez, Estoril... ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. I was so disappointed when I
saw the new Zeltweg circuit... compared to the original, the new one is
so ordinary.

In order to make the tracks safer, organisers have made them
"sanitized": they all look and feel alike. No wonder drivers love Spa so
much.
