Anyone have any info on the death of Brazilian F3000 driver Marco Campos,
killed last weekend during the race at Magny-Cours? I heard he went off
at the Adelaide hairpin.

Further info/corrections appreciated.

Well, I don't have much information, but I know the car has been flipping
over several times. Campos got in a coma, and was declared 'clinicly' dead
at Sunday night.

I saw the crash on TV, and it was harrowing. Campos was in a battle for 9th
position when he tried to pass another car on the approach to the Adelaide
hairpin. He ran over the opponents rear tire (like Patrese '92 or Ch.
Fittipaldi '93), and the car became airborne. It landed upside down on top of
the concrete barrier - still going at high speed - until it shot straight back
onto the track at the beginning of the hairpin. At that moment the driver's
helmet made heavy contact with the wall, what caused the severe head injuries.
Campos was officially declared dead on Tuesday morning.

I saw it on Eurosport, and remember thinking "Oh Shit" as it happened.

It happened on the last lap, approaching the hairpin. Campos was
attempting to overtake another car (sorry, can't remember the driver's
name) and his front wheel rode over the other car's back wheel,
launching Campos' car into the air. It was very similar to the
Berger-Patrase incident a few years back. (Come to think of it, is was
more similar to the Martini-Fittipaldi incident a couple of years back
on the finish line of the ??? GP).

Having been launched skywards, the car came down on top of the armco.
It was upside-down, and the point of contact between armco and car was
unfortunately Campos' head. The car ended the right way up up on the
gravel trap outside the hairpin, but Campos didn't move. (I presume his
neck must have been broken on the armco, but that is my own
speculation).

Martini and Fittipaldi came together in Monza '93. We should
all be thankful that many of the recent flip-overs (Hill, Verstappen,
Warwick) did not occur near these concrete barriers.
I did not see the F3000 race (no lower formulae races from
Europe are shown in Canada), but we shouldn't forget how dangerous
this sport is. Campos may or may not have become a Senna (I know
nothing about him), but his death should not be overlooked.
