I am pleased to see Massa doing so well but it does beg the question
regarding why his performance for most of the season has been so lack
lustre, poor even. That Ferrari are going to renew his contract
suggests they are aware of the reasons and that they, not Massa, are at
fault.

Plenty of ammo for conspiracy theorists but few answers.

Ferrari are trying to finish second in the WCC. Now they can't
sabotage Massa anymore. Pathetic. Massa seems faster than Alonso now
without the sabotaging. Oops!

I read an interesting article in a German online magazine "Der Spiegel",
which is by no means a sports magazine or even a yellow press thing. The
author claims that, unlike all other F1 teams where managers and/or
engineers have a say regarding the drivers, Luca di Montezemolo is the
*only* person calling the shots at Ferrari. And, his theory goes, LdM is
a big pal with Jean Todt, FIA president. Now, guess who is Felipe's
manager? Yup, Nicolas Todt, the son of Jean.
Basically, this author claims that LdM is signing FM to ensure his
influence with FIA/JT, because JT wouldn't like to see his son barred of
his biggest income source. Quid pro Quo.

Does this qualify as an conspiracy theory? :)

Do Ferrari have many options? There's a lot of expectation that one of
the current RBR drivers is Ferrari-bound for 2014, so they'd need a
seat warmer for 2013. Who else is
a) likely to do a better job than Massa
b) prepared to take the job for one year only
and
c) available?

If the speculation about Webber or Vettel driving for Ferrari in 2014
is correct then I wonder if Massa's seat for 2013 was ever at serious
risk.
