Hi:

Is there a datbase anywhere on the web that has the heights of the current crop
of F1 drivers? There are a few shorties out there like Villeneuve who is only
5'6''.

Hm. Let's see: JV-5'6"
Hill-6'-6'1"
Wurz-6'2"
Diniz-I didn't think he was *that* tall.
Coulthard-5'11"

I would say that most are in the 5'7"-5'10" range. Of course, Mansell measures
the same in width. ;)

He's definitely isn't. I'm only 5'3ish and he's not *that* much
taller than me... well under 6'.

One gets the feeling that F1 drivers' heights are about as accurately
reported as Holywood stars' ages.. (Just adjusted the opposite
way..) :-)

I don't know exactly how tall these drivers are, but when I was at Montreal
a couple of years ago this is what I noticed (I'm 5'10"):

Eddie Irvine - taller than me (6' maybe)
Damon Hill - taller than me (6' - 6'1" maybe)
Michael Schumacher - about my height
David Coulthard - taller than me (6'1" maybe)
Mika H - taller than me (6'1" maybe)
Gerhard Berger - taller than me (6'1"-6'2" maybe)
HHF - a little taller than me (5'10"-5'11 maybe)
Jean Alesi - shorter than me (5'4" maybe)
Jacques V - about my height, maybe a little shorter

My general opinion was that most of the other drivers were about my height
or shorter than I was.

It's terribly difficult to judge height by "eye" - something to do
with our own eyes being below TDC I think! Because we look up to see
the tops of heads... it implies "taller". I'd lop 3 or 4 inches of
each of Katie's estimates. (Nothing personal Katie!)
:o)

Mebbe it's because photographers and TV cameramen (er, persons) often
walk around with their knees bent and not locked into the "straight"
position. When you're in a hurry, hungry for some good shots, you tend
to kinda crouch "ready to spring for action". Takes a couple of inches
off from your (and the TV) viewpoint. For me it's pretty instinctive.
Not only for the reason above, but also for the subconscious instinct to
knee more the more "glamorous" you want the photo to be. Needless to
say, photographing my 6-year old daughter (110 cm) has cost me some
pretty expensive suit trousers :)

Besides, there's common courtesy. It wouldn't be too polite to air an
interview of the top pilots with them looking UP at the camera. And the
fans would lose their illusions of grandeur :)

But then, cameramen are usually pretty tall too, just so that they can
take some shots in a crowd.

Maybe, if you were sitting down!

He's a schnipp!

I'm 6'4" and he just about came up to my armpits in Melbourne! (I just measured,
and that's 5'0", so maybe give him a couple of inches for luck.)

JV. Small man, big talent. But only when turning left. And only in the dry.

No. Eddie's shorter. About 5'8" or 5'9". I saw Berger (ERdie sprayed him with
mustard) chasing him in a picture and Eddie was a bit shorter than Berger.

> Damon Hill - taller than me (6' - 6'1" maybe)

Correct. This as anything to keep his weight down. poor guy starves himself.

> Michael Schumacher - about my height

I think he is shorter than Damon by about 1 1/2 inches so you are close.

> David Coulthard - taller than me (6'1" maybe)

About the same as Damon.

> Mika H - taller than me (6'1" maybe)

No. I think he is shorter than David.

Correct.

Yes.

Yes.

No, he is shorter.

If you are 5'10", do you have any pics of yourself on the web. 5'10" is a
very nice height.

Anybody know Tora Takagi's height? He appears to be a lot bigger than Ukyo.
I think the main reason the Japanese have not had a good driver is upper body
strength. Tora looks pretty strong and fairly tall. I also think Shinji has
improved a lot and is not that bad.

I had heard that the modern Japanese, Americans and other people average
height has increased since World War 2. It all has to do with diet. I think
the Japanese ships during WW2 had really small walkways because average
Japanese person was about 5'1". The average Japanese person today is a
taller.

This is true. They are all comparitive shrimps. I don't have anything
against shorter people but Hollywood not try to pretend people are taller.
Mel Gibson, Sly, Kurt Russell, Tom Cruise, Redford, Hoffman and others I am
forgetting. Clint is tall and Harrison Ford is about 5'10".

According to the F1 yearbook Takagi is 1.80 m, Only Hill (1.82) and Wurz
(1.86) are taller. Coulthard is 1.80m as well.

Interestingly the most shortarsed (sorry- vertically challenged) driver
is Johnny Herbert (1.67m) who is listed as 3cm shorter than Alesi.
