Well yes, but there is nothing to stop someone being from Ulster and the
Republic. After all, a third of Ulster is on that side of the border.
He's from Northern Ireland. "Ulster" is only used by the DUP, the British
Army and some British broadcasters. It's a bit like saying "the province"

accusing you of having such a bias).

Well, he's right.
As muich as I dislike it Eddie is British.
Not that he really cares - I just find it sad that he was forced not to use
the flag he always raced with - the tricolour. I just wish people would call
him British, instead of Irish - it sucks.
Or Ulsterman, or Northern Irishman.
Personally I'm happy - he's the second ever person from the island to win a
race, John Watson being first.
He had to get a British one I believe.
Eddie asked the FIA to have a neutral flag, but they said no.

Eddie Irvine is indeed British, he has indeed got a British Passport, he was
as stated born in Conlig, Co. Down, which is in Northern Ireland and which is,
still, British.
He does live, however, in Dublin. Dalkey, I rather think, not too far from my

Yes, I just said that!! LOL!
This does not make him British either as the UK stands for the United
Kingdom of Great Britain AND Northern Ireland.
So, technically they were right to display the Union flag but wrong to
describe him as British. Ho hum, doesn't really matter what flag they fly I
don't think anybody will ever deny him to be 100 pc Irish.
Should be interesting if Jordan win a race again this year. EJ was angry
that they played God Save the Queen at Spa last year. Apparently they
didn't have the Irish national anthem on tape so he made them promise to get
it for all the tracks.
something was going on after that race, i know i remember that :-)

Good for you, Tom.
Not to throw more fuel in the fire, but here's a quote from Eddie
taken from Sporting Life. Make of it what you will:
"I knew I was going to win this race. A friend of mine from
Japan called me the other day and said he dreamt that I'd
win in Australia. The next day an ex-girlfriend called me and
she also said that she dreamt I'd win here. It is amazing and
fantastic to get my first win with Ferrari. To see all the Irish
flags out there was just phenomenal.
"I really didn't think I'd win here so didn't have a bet
on myself. There are plenty of Irish pubs in Melbourne and I'll
be visiting them."

It isn't difficult to see where the jackstaff is kept in your neck o' the
woods, twinkie.
Dab
The Union Jack is always a jack and never a flag. A jack is different from a
flag just like a flag is different from a pennon (pennant).
The Union Jack is a "jack" because it represents the national flags of
England (red cross of St. George on a white background) and Scotland (white
cross of St. Andrew on a blue background). There are additional stripes (I
forget what they're called) to represent Northern Ireland.
In other words: It's a jack, Jack.

Super Pants
Siegfried & Roy's secret love child
I saw the thread was 75 messages long, so I couldn't be bothered to read them
all. So, apologies if this has already been answered, but this is the
situation on Eddie Irvine's nationality: He is not from the Irish Republic,
he is from Northern Ireland. NI is part of the United Kingdom. The UK
consists of Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) and NI. So Eddie is
not British either, because NI is NOT part of Britain, although it IS part of
the UK. The Union Jack is not the British flag, it is the flag of the UK. As
NI is part of the UK, the Union flag was flown for Eddie. 'God Save The
Queen' is the national anthem of the UK, not Britain, so hence the choice of
National anthem. I hope that clarifies in no uncertain terms the difference
between the United Kingdom and Great Britain. They are NOT the same! Great
Britain is merely a part of the United Kingdom :-) And as Eddie is from
Northern Ireland not the Republic of Ireland, he is therefore from the UK.
Hope that makes sense :-)

I was at the race and saw 1, maybe 2 maximum 'Ulster' flags, the rest were
all tricoloured Irish flags and Ferrari flags, and I'm talking lots of them.
By the way if Irvine is the Brit that you make him out to be, why does he
sport the Republic of Ireland colours on his helmet AND have a shamrock on
the back of it??
