That's very true but it seems that this year we have had a higher number
of racing related deaths than in previous years.

Terrible news that was... I was watching it on Speedvision
and had a horrible feeling after seeing it (unfortunately I was
right). One of my first thoughts was about how awful Tom must feel -
had read several posts describing how excited he was to be going to
the race weekend. I certainly feel for his family and friends, as
well as all spectators feeling the same loss.
-----------------------------------------------------
If we're here to make others happy, exactly what
are the OTHERS here to do?
-----------------------------------------------------
I started to watch the race but had to go out before
it happened. I don't know whether I'm glad I didn't
see it or disappointed that I couldn't empathize when
it happened. One is one too many, never mind the
dozens killed in the last 50 years.
I don't mean to be callous or flippant, but we can't
be surprised. The day there are no driver deaths is
the day the drivers use remote controls to drive the
cars from the pitlane.
Now *there's* an idea....

I'd assume this was just after turn one; that's the most dangerous
corner at Mosport. The cars have hit top speed on the front straight,
and then turn one is a fast right-hander where the track drops away.
Lose it there and you can end up sideways on the track. I've seen
cars get hit there; the approaching car can't see the other car until
about the apex of turn one, by which time it's far too late to do
anything. Take your eye off the flagger at just the wrong moment
to set up for the turn and you'll miss what little warning there is.
Yes, between one and two.
Ruhlman turned Gagliardo around and he hit the inside wall, bounced
into traffic and Longo nailed him in the passenger door. On the grid
after the red you could see the body damage on the left front corner
of Ruhlman's car.
Had his C2 fused today. Some weakness in his arms, but the prognosis is for
a full recovery. The Doctor's figure it is just from the swelling and
bruising in that area. See:
http://speedvision.com/pub/articles/racing/06road/010521a.html
FWIW...C2 is very high up in the neck...about two finger widths down from
the bottom of the little bump at the base of your skull. He is very lucky.
I'd be interested to know if he was wearing the HANS device.
Here's wishing Gary Longo a complete and speedy recovery.

Sadly, neither Longo nor Gagliardo were wearing it.
NASCAR's Gordon credits HANS device
Indianapolis Star Wire Services
May 22, 2001
NASCAR star Jeff Gordon said the Head and Neck Support (HANS) device
helped him survive a crash Saturday night that was similar to the one
that killed Dale Earnhardt in the Feb. 18 Daytona 500.
On a crash-aborted start of The Winston, NASCAR's all-star race,
Gordon's Chevrolet slammed right-front first into a concrete wall at
Lowe's Motor Speedway at Concord, N.C., much as Earnhardt's Chevy had
done at Daytona International Speedway.
Gordon escaped with pain in his neck. "I hit at about the worst
possible angle," Gordon said. "My neck snapped really bad -- it really
stretched out there."
Gordon climbed into a backup car and won the race, which was halted
for more than two hours by the rain that caused his first-lap crash.
Gordon was wearing a HANS head-and-neck support device. Earnhardt
wasn't.
At Las Vegas on March 5, Gordon became the first driver to win a
Winston Cup race wearing a HANS, a system of helmet tethers anchored
to a carbon-fiber composite collar.
Kenny Wilden was wearing one earlier in the weekend and I've read since that
it broke during an accident he'd had on Friday and he only suffered back
pain. I can't imagine what could have happened if he didn't have one on.
I visited the SCCA website yesterday and Wilden has posted in their BBS
section. He and his wife had visited Gary Longo and his family at
Sunnybrook yesterday. Longo had undergone surgery and they'd put him in
traction to relieve pressure on his spine, that has since restored feeling.
He's now listed in Fair Condition at a hospital that is one of the best Any
further information about this nightmare can be found at
http://www.sccaproracing.com/. I think that this is the last I'll post on
the topic.

According to a report from the attending doctor (a friend)
on site, Gagliardo was wearing the device and it broke.
I won't go into the details but, based on the other information,
the collision and resulting other injuries probably made that fact moot.
For those that know Mosport, turn 10 has been opened up
during recent track changes
leading to higher speeds down the straight and hence into
turn 1, where the collision took place.

Interesting. The source of this press release is the SCCA:
BOWMANVILLE, ONT. Twenty-five year old rookie Trans-Am Series Driver
Gary Longo, of Chicago, Ill., was seriously injured in an accident
Sunday at Mosport International Raceway while competing in the 125
mile Trans-Am event.
Longo was airlifted to the Sunnybrook and Women’s College Health
Sciences Centre Trauma unit where he was diagnosed with a broken C2
vertebra, which is located below the base of his skull in his upper
neck. Doctors and family were relieved when Longo demonstrated
movement in his legs and hands. X-rays and an MRI indicated that the
spinal column was disrupted and the encased spinal cord was bruised.
Longo suffered severe bruising to his upper body but sustained no
other injuries in the crash.
Neurosurgeons at Sunnybrook operated on Longo today in order to repair
the fracture and restore stability to his spinal column. This was
facilitated by a bone graft from Longo’s left hip, which was
reinforced by an overlapping metal plate. The operation took just
over four hours to complete. Doctors reported that the operation was
very successful. Longo’s condition has now been upgraded from critical
to fair. Longo is currently in a halo vest, keeping his neck
perfectly still giving the bones their best chance to heal. If all
goes well, Longo will be transferred closer to his Evanston, IL home
within one week.
On lap 38 of the 50 lap event, Longo’s car collided with the # 29
Chevrolet Corvette driven by Mike Gagliardo. Gagliardo was transported
to Lakeridge Health Center in Bowmanville, Ontario, where he was
pronounced dead upon arrival.
Witnesses to the accident reported that two cars tangled forcing one
car off the track creating a dust cloud that completely obscured the
track. As Longo followed through turn 1, completely blinded by the
dust cloud he was unable to see the #29 Cheverolet Corvette which had
spun to a stop in the center of the track; the impact was unavoidable.
Neither driver was wearing a Hans restraint devise.
David T Krawczyk, President and COO of Wickes Lumber stated, “This was
truly a tragic day for race fans, our thoughts and prayers go out to
the families and friends of both the Gagliardo and Longo family’s”
“We are truly sadden by this tragedy,” said Kerry Alexander, Owner of
LAC Motorsports and Driver of #35 Panoz Esperante “The entire crew and
I are very happy with the progress of Gary’s recovery so far. Gary is
a very tough kid and we look forward to helping him through this. Our
thoughts and prayers also go out to the friends and family of Mike
Gagliardo.”
Kathie, with all common sense, I read that as well. I am aware however that
Kenny Wilden had one on Friday and broke his HANS from what I know. I hope
that the information I give clears up some of the confusion. Perhaps there
was a little too much going on for one weekend.

Certainly there can be doubt both ways as much confusion and
mis-information happens during and after a tragedy such as this.
However, I put more reliability in my source than the press.
Partly since it is someone I know, and partly because they were there
at the scene. Obviously, if more information surfaces,
we'll all know more.

Again, I think the point I would like to make was that the HANS
device was probably not a factor in the eventual outcome (again, based on
my information).

Dave,
Once again you've made a good point. And despite me being a fan of the
series, covering 2 decades of it as a racing fan, I've never visited the
SCCA BBS. I found that information to be very useful, and although this
might sound unusual in the context of CART, F1 etc. I felt differently
(positive) about how it was covered by those who were involved, as so many
people from all sides who were there did it.
It's so unusual when the Drivers, Owners and Track Workers post to a BBS and
help you fill in the blanks, offer their condolences and assist you in
feeling a little better about a shitty thing as you know that concerns are
shared in a big way.
Thanks again. As you said "Obviously, if more information surfaces,
we'll all know more"
I took 4 people for an impromptu tour there on Saturday night to give them
the idea of what a great place it was. Now I feel different about Mosport.
Ward Burton was wearing one at California in a Cup race and it broke, he
was injured in that crash.
We suffered a concussion and cut on his chin.
Better than a broken neck, IMHO.

True, in that is was a side impact. The hans device is designed to slow the
head and limit it's forward motion.
Regarding a HANS device breaking...chances are that in the course of an
accident, if the device broke, it would still have slowed and/or limited the
forward movement of a drivers head to a freat extend. You know, kinda like
the carbon fiber of a ChampCar breaking all up, looking awful, but actually
dissipating much of the energy.
I'd still rather wear one than not.

I think one has to go with the SCCA on this one-unless NASCAR is doing
their PR.
