The stewards reaction to the incident was classic.

Vastly overstating the case.

Hamilton owned his error.

I've got to say that it certainly seemed deserving of a penalty to
Hamilton, but because Alonso survived, they seemed to think that
Hamilton taking himself out of the race was penalty enough.

My thought on hearing Alonso's message was if that's what he thinks then why did he try to go wheel
to wheel with Lewis in a corner?

There have been drivers who've been known for 'elbows out' racing over the years and good drivers
know to not mix it up with them too much. IMO Alonso's reaction said more about his own driving
than it did about Lewis'.

Alonso has spent a lot of recent races deliberately being a mobile chicane, he has to know that the
better faster driver / car combos are going to treat him harshly when passing him.

HAM is pretty optimistic going into that corner. ALO was already inside
and HAM turned in too hot. Miscalculation, maybe? Amateurish, maybe?
Maybe he thinks that ALO will blueball in that scenario because there's
another inside corner after it. Who knows. But it resulted in him doing
a DNF instead of fighting for a podium place. It was a good tussle and
it certainly spices things up going forward.

the stewards are known to be more liberal on lap 1.

the mercedes and alpine drivers should've formed a collective pact and all slipstreamed and sling shotted for each other for at least for the first few laps or until the first round of pit stops - getting in each other's way helped none of them and just helped verstappen to pass them all (leclerc merely blew it again) - mercedes would've at least increased their chances of a podium and both alpines would have been guaranteed higher finishes.

(at imola in 1982 i believe that about half the grid made a collective pact not to truly race until halfway - though that grid only had 14 cars and the pact was probably helped by most of the drivers agreeing to it being french speakers so easily understanding each other - however that collective pact did famously confuse the 2 ferrari drivers who had made a separate pact with each other).

Giving some leeway where it is unclear who did what is one thing.

This one was absolutely clearcut.

It was only Alonso and Hamilton driving next to each other.

And Hamilton has admitted he was completely to blame.

Hamilton stuffed up, cost Alonso a position and could have taken him
out of the race. He had every right to be annoyed and mouth off. Anyone
who then prizes that as anything more than a glib response, like the
op, is being a dick.

Hamilton got a pass from stewards for a completely obvious case of
causing a collision, so I'm prepared to give Alonso a pass for words
said in the heat of the moment.
