It used to be that the coverage for each GP was provided by the local
TV station that had the TV rights for that country and then retransmitted
by one of Bernie's (or Slavica's) companies. This meant that the quality
was somewhat variable. The digital TV (Bernie TV) was separated and
handled by a Bernie company, but that has closed down some years ago, no ?
A little side bar in the French Sport-Auto explained that this has
recently changed. Now a Bernie company handles most (*) of the GPs and
the director is a Bernie man. And apparently his instructions say that
the adverts on the side of the track (which are sold by a Bernie company)
must be show very well. The cars, the action on the track, etc. need not.
* there are 3 exceptions: In Brasil the unions regulations don't allow
the coverage to be done by foreigners, in Japan the local TV company had
a previous contract that has not yet expired and Monaco, due to being
a city circuit (needs more cameras ?), is also excepted.
In another little sidebar, it is said that one of the first things Bernie
has done after buying the Turkish track was to triple the track prices.
The WSR (World Series by Renault) had already cancelled the race there
and FIA-GT seems to be next.

Odd - watching an ITV feed 4 weeks ago, I felt that this
was the best coverage of F1 that I remember. (I've only
had Finnish and Estonian coverage for the last 6 years,
and speak neither language, so have had to completely rely
on my eyes for my F1 experience.) Having a real F1 driver
doing commentary is worth more than any pundit.

I think it is that "variable" quality which most of us dislike. The FOM
coverage is by far superior to most local companies. While they have
along way to go in many areas this consistency is a vast improvement
IMO.
