I realize I'm on the laggard side of the Product Life Cycle but bear
with me. I was a Heat guy up until now.

My problem is with the AI in NR2003. I love the physics but... For
instance after a lot of track time I qualified 4th at Pocono at 100% AI
strength. So I can run competitive times. I start the race and I usually
get wrecked on the first corner. I break for the corner and Junior comes
from like eight lengths back Kamikaze style into the corner like I'm not
there and boots me. This happens about 80 % of the time it's impossible to
get through a race. This is just an example it happens more or less on each
track and with all drivers.

I've searched the group on Google and this AI problem does seem to be a
known issue but I'm unclear on the solution. Do you change an ini file or
reduce their aggression or what? I've even tried to drive (horrors,
horrors) defensively but that often makes it worse.

I want to love this game but it's making it very hard.

TIA

Don't you know Jr. can do anything he wants in NASCAR and get away with it.
lol

IIRC www.thegreenflag.com (I'd check, but I'm at work) has some AI tweaks.
They help, but there is no perfect cure.

Jr. in NASCAR, MS in Formula 1. Who's the 'Golden Child' in CART and IRL? :-)

The AI in NASCAR 2002 was moronic and rear-ended me alot. The game was
just no fun to play so I returned it. It wouldn't surprise me that it was
so bad in 2003.

Go back to NASCAR HEAT, dude. Can't beat it for left-hand-turning action
as a singleplayer game. At least the AI drives with some personality. I
also like all the mods, especially Spirit of HEAT. Also if you have a PS2,
check out Dirt to Daytona.

I fired up the NASCAR 2003 demo to try out, and, despite turning off the
"run complete pace lap" , it still made me go around the track behind a pace
car. No rolling start skips?. To top it off, it black flagged me for some
wierd reason and then disqualified me. The cars also have no power steering
and handled more like the race-cars in GPL- with full force feedback it felt
like I was driving a bus. I immediately deleted the demo from my hard
drive.

NASCAR Thunder 2003 on PC also isn't as bad as everybody was saying.
Sure, it doesn't have 42 car multiplayer or career mode ,but it's more like
NASCAR HEAT in its user-friendlyness.

The only Papyrus racing sims I've had any measure of enjoyment out of have
been NASCAR Legends and, to a lesser extent, Grand Prix Legends.

And the saddest part is that the greatly anticipated upcoming patch does
nothing about this well known problem (at least according to the readme).

I've run several leagues with Nascar HEat mods, but I think you will
find most of the guys here are not to fond of that title. Here is the
lowdown.

GPL=Great.
Viper RAcing = pretty good
Nascar HEat.= crap to barely ok....

(ssshhh...don't tell people that the same team that made Viper also made
NH.)

Maybe it isn't so great for multiplayer, but for singleplayer it's alot
more fun than Papyrus NASCAR games. It has just the right number of options
to make the game fun (like no yellow flags, no pace laps, reduced race
lengths, etc.), yet you can have all the hardcore physics you want.

Thanks. To finish off this thread thegreenflag website was useful. In
there he also suggested to "try decreasing the dlong_pad_scaling value in
track.ini Making something less than 1, say 0.50" This helped a bit.
Still after I farted around with NR 2003 I ran a great race in Heat when I
was running Third and ran out of gas on the last lap. Then ran a truck race
(from the old HC CTS mod) at Michagan that was flat out all the way door
banging great race. Like I said I want to Love NR 2003 but its hard.

ps did you see what Junior did to Mark Martin yesterday. He came from 18
lengths back to boot him off. So I guess NR 2003 is hyper realistic. :-)

Seems like I have had better luck increasing dlong_pad_scaling to very large
numbers. Whatever. If there is a track at which you think the AI is okay,
check the number for that track and then try it with the ones that are
giving you problems. I believe that parameter is the right one to fool
with, but there seems to be no real concensus on what it does or how it
works.

Maybe you are cutting across from the high lane into the low lane and the AI
doesnt expect it. Try running a "two-wide" line until the field spreads a
bit
