I know this is not an antivirus forum but I was unable to find an answer
that maybe a gamer can help me with. I have Norton Antivirus Corporate
Edition 8.1 installed and there is a realtime protection that I disable when
gaming but a reminder will pop up in the lower right corner that tells me it
is disabled. When it comes up during any game the game minimizes. Anyone
have a clue how I disable reminder? very frustrating!

I can't stand Norton ANYTHING, but...
Isn't there an options screen when you run the main program? I assume from the
way your question was worded that you looked at the properties in the systray
program...

Agreed. Norton does more harm than good. I keep it disabled, and scan
occasionally. I know it's not the most proactive approach, but Norton's is
so blessedly evasive that it gives me no choice.

Providing you are up to date on Windows Update, and you aren't checking your
email and opening executable attachements, then you aren't going to get a
virus while playing a video game anyways. So just totally kill ALL of that
AV stuff before you play.

Why not just ditch norton all together, and use one of the many online (and
up to date) virus scanners? like:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

Thanks for the advice men. I do disable the Norton and the problem is that
it reminds me it is disabled. I am pretty certain that there are no other
settings in the options that will kill the reminder. I will explore the
option of using online AV but I have heard they often run adware. Thanks
again

Except Norton Ghost. Anyone who doesn't use it (or at least Driveimage etc)
must be insane.

Or unaware of its benefits. We(well, not me - our desktop support guys) use
Ghost at work to quickly re-image systems over the network. I've never run it
for home use. What advantages would it gain me?

This is all fine n' dandy as long as a virus hasn't disabled the system.
The only problem I've found with Norton is that it affects bootup times.
But really, NAV has saved my system on more than one occassion during a
download, so I was damn glad I had it.
Netsky paid me a visit recently and NAV was there to meet it at the door.
That alone pays for the software.
Like any AV software, it has to be running properly.

Well, I use 3 partitions. Basically, one has Windows, one has games and one
has misc stuff. I backup the Windows partition with Norton Ghost and when
Windows decides to do something silly or reacts badly to some new software,
I can have it restored to its former glory within 5 minutes. An average
Windows XP installation with everything set up the way I like it and all the
essential drivers/utilities installed compressses to a 600MB image which can
be burned to a CD. The same principal as Windows XP's system restore but
far more comprehensive and reliable. I consider myself a power user who
runs lots of bleeding edge software though - it might not be as beneficial
to a casual home user/gamer.

Nope. Not easily, at least. That's just one reason why I run a separate
WinXP gaming partition.

One thing you _can_ do is turn off the Norton Services in your service list.
It's a pain, but it's the only way around it.

I have a similar setup. Multi-Boot with three WinXP installations. One for
General Stuff, one for Work and one for gaming.

They are too slow. I prefer to use the free AVG antivirus program and
use it in manual mode only.

This is such a late reply that I don't even know if it's worth it, but
here is something you may want to try:

There's a utility software called TweakUI that used to be provided on
the Windows install software but you now have to download:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

The link you want is on the right side, the third one from the top.
Install it, then run it and go to General->Focus. Check the box next
to "Prevent applications from stealing focus" then click "OK" to exit
the program. Now try running a game and see if things are better.

If that doesn't work and you really want to switch AV programs, try
Avast!

http://www.avast.com/

Their home version is free. However, you must register every year to
use it.
