I was impressed with the Total Immersion Racing demo, and aside from
the console menu screens, the physics model seemed to have a lot of
potential, so I went ahead and bought the full version.

Using all the info I could gather from others who have been modifying
and tweaking TIR, I have developed an all-in-one patch for Total
Immersion Racing that should do for TIR what the Advanced Physics
Patch" did for SCGT -- I've solved the brake lockup problem,
Razorworks has clued us in on how to make the AI behave a bit more
realistically, and the modifications that I'm using for the the grip
levels and the tyre sounds completely transform the game. If you're
looking for something new with a rewarding physics model, then TIR
with my advanced patch just might be the ticket.

You can find the Total Immersion Racing at my TIR Patch site,
compliments of Blackhole Motorsports:

http://irlheat.bhmotorsports.com/TIR/

Note that I have developed a special version of the Advanced Physics
Patch specifically for the demo version as well. That will enable
people who haven't purchased the full version of TIR to sample the
full goodness of TIR in advance. The demo only features a one-lap
race, though, and since TIR also models tyre and brake temps (it feels
a lot like a Papy or MGI sim in this respect), you really need to put
in a couple of laps to warm the tyres up before the physics model
truly "comes alive." The demo patch will enable you to see how good
the full version feels when using the Advanced Physics Patch.

The patches for the full version and the demo version are both small
downloads -- about 435kB each.

Also, note that my modifications are intended to work for people who
use DRIVING WHEELS, not gamepads.

Make sure you download the correct patch depending on whether you're
using the demo or the full version of the game. Check the readme file
for a list of all the files that are affected by this patch.

FYI, if you haven't tried the demo yet, be advised that the TIR demo
is not a "de-tuned" example of the full version of the game. My
patches for the demo and the full version are identical, in fact --
only the install path and the installer screen logo/name have changed,
but I thought I'd provide something specifically for the demo to allow
the general public to sample all the goodness that Total Immersion
Racing has to offer.

Enjoy!

Just took the default Audi for a quick spin at Silverstone.
First impression: Squeal City! :-)
Second Impression: better control over the car, certainly much more
fun to drive.
But man, the Audi throws it's ass around if I just give the brake
pedal a stern look. Can't remember the default physics were like that.
Is this the brakebalance thingie?

I foresee many days ahead of TIR testing and driving.
Mucho thanks to jbodin for putting this together!

iirc - I couldnt use two controllers ( momo + speed 7's ) in the demo - has
this been sorted in the full version? Or a later version of the demo?

I don't think there's a workaround for this one, unfortunately. I
know that split-axis support is no problem, but I think that the game
tries to assign the second controller to Player 2.

Hmmmm . . . I just spotted a post by Murkz on the High Gear TIR forum
in response to this very question -- it sounds promising. In response
to this message:

Cris_Ace wrote:

I mean that if it's possible to use the MOMO wheel combined with an
ACT labs pedals set to have a 2 in one controller(I don't like the
MOMO plastic pedals

This is possible in f1 200x ,in all Papy games(GPL ,nascar ecc..)but
not in gp4
is this possible in TIR?

===============

Murkz responded that he's using the MOMO wheel / ACT Labs pedals
successfully:

===============

is possible as I do just that, but see if you get the same problem
I get. I have to configure the axis and buttons every time.

So, it sounds like mutiple controllers IS do-able after all . . .

John,

Can you tell me if TIR will work with DX 9 ???
I reinstalled the demo in order to try out your improvements however when I
try to launch the game/demo it complains that DX8.1b isn't installed and to
install it from the game CD. (even though the demo was a D/L from a website
rather than from a CD)

Any suggestions?

That is fairly common, most programs don't check for future versions of
dx, they only want to make sure you have what was current when the demo was
released. So, generally speaking...without having tried that stuff yet...
:)
It "should" work just fine.
Also a good point to remember is NOT to let programs install previous
versions of directx if you have a newer one already onboard.

1) Thanks!!!!!!

2) I had already done a number of these tweaks on my own because I too could
see the value of the physics model hidden beneath several layers of
console-style numbness and dumbness.

3) It is wonderful to have an easy-to-install version of all of this

4) However, the latest official patch to TIR got rid of half the FFB in my
Logi MOMO Racing wheel. The patch is needed for other reasons. This ruins
the game. I basically put the CD on the shelf after the patch when it was
clear there would not be another official patch. The easiest way to tell
the effect is there is no FFB over the curbs. Originally, the curb/jaggies
FFB was wonderfully done. Any ideas? From my time at the TIR board way
back when, I don't think this only affects my particular set-up.

Well, I reinstalled Direct X 9 just to be safe but same error!
Looks like I may have to unstall DX9 and reinstall DX8.1b to run this?! If
that can even be done?

Anyone else running DX9 and TIR?

FWIW, the latest patch (available from www.razorworks.com or the BHMS
TIR downloads area) fixes the DX8 error message problem.

Also, I think you can use the no-CD patch (available in the BHMS TIR
downloads section) with the demo, if the demo is giving you DX8
problems.

John,

I finally had some free time to attempt the reinstall of TIR in order to try
out your new patches, however when I run the installshield wizard after it
writes the various files to the hard drive I get an error "Failed to install
windows media format files" causing the demo not to able to run.

Further, when I try to install the patch, it complains that TIR must be
installed first!

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Here's the DX8 workaround posted on the Empire Interactive TIR FAQ:

=======================

Have you updated your Direct X from 8.1b to 8.2 or 9.0?

Total Immersion Racing was developed and released before Direct X 8.2
and 9.0 was distributed by Microsoft and was only tested under Direct
X 8.1b. If you have updated your Direct X from 8.1b to version 8.2 or
9.0 you then need to action the following

1. Place the Total Immersion Racing disk in your drive and cancel the
auto install option.
2. Double click on the My Computer icon on your Windows Desk top with
your left hand mouse button.
3. Click on the drive letter of your CD ROM where TIR is placed with
your right hand mouse button and select explore with your left hand
mouse button.
4. Double click on the folder IS with your Left hand mouse button
5. Double click on the Setup.exe file ( Icon of small computer screen,
disk and box ) with your left hand mouse button. ( If your have
previously installed the game it may ask you to remove the installed
version, action this request and then repeat point 5 )
6. The install shield should activate. Follow the on screen commands
7. When the game has installed install the European Total Immersion
Racing patch
8. Activate the game using the desktop icon.

=======================

I assume that for the US version you install the US patch after
executing the Setup.exe file.

Hope this helps a bit!
