BUT . . .
Is anybody out there even playing around with TIR (besides me)? And
if so, would ANY of you be interested in doing some beta testing as I
start to dial-in the AI? It's tough doing these kind of things on
your own, so any help I could get would be greatly appreciated.

Patches and Tweaks for TIR:

I assume this must be the culprit we'll see, as I have found the full
version online for a reasonable price and am expecting it to arrive in the
mail next week, so hopefully I'll have better luck with the complete game.
I'm running DX9, Windows 98SE, on an Intel PIII 933 chipset w/a GForce 2 GTS
64 meg video card (got both the card and the system back in 2000 from Falcon
NW, so it's a very stable, if a bit dated system.

Don't despair. It's not a lost cause. But it's not very "mod" friendly.
I'd forgotten abt. the DX8.1/DX9 "trap," but since I installed T.I.R.
*before* I installed DX9, I guess I'm past that hurdle. I'd like to help,
time permitting. But don't expect the world to beat a path to your door. I
agree it's a game that has/had great potential, but unless the donks who
worked on it step up to help, I fear it's doomed. In the long run, anyway.
Meanwhile, let's play.

Have you updated your Direct X from 8.1b to 8.2 or 9.0?
Total Immersion Racing was developed and released before Direct X 8.2
and 9.0 was distributed by Microsoft and was only tested under Direct
X 8.1b. If you have updated your Direct X from 8.1b to version 8.2 or
9.0 you then need to action the following
1. Place the Total Immersion Racing disk in your drive and cancel the
auto install option.
2. Double click on the My Computer icon on your Windows Desk top with
your left hand mouse button.
3. Click on the drive letter of your CD ROM where TIR is placed with
your right hand mouse button and select explore with your left hand
mouse button.
4. Double click on the folder IS with your Left hand mouse button
5. Double click on the Setup.exe file ( Icon of small computer screen,
disk and box ) with your left hand mouse button. ( If your have
previously installed the game it may ask you to remove the installed
version, action this request and then repeat point 5 )
6. The install shield should activate. Follow the on screen commands
7. When the game has installed install the European Total Immersion
Racing patch
8. Activate the game using the desktop icon.

I assume that for the US version you install the US patch after
executing the Setup.exe file.
FWIW, if you're having DX8 problems with the DEMO version, the no-CD
patch for the full version (available on the Blackhole Motorsports
site) will fix your problem, I believe.
Hope this helps!

I think you need to rename the demo directory to just "TIR" and then
rename the demo executable to "tir.exe" in order to get the no-CD
patch to work with the demo version.
Give that a try and let me know if it works!

Ditto - tried the demo ( which I found quite appauling anyway ) and cant
have dual controllers.

So, tell me -- WHICH cars "can't" spin out? This is one aspect that
the Advanced Physics Patch most certainly addreses -- and very
successfully, I believe, so I am definitely interested in your
feedback on this.
Aside from that, though, the Advanced Physics Patch is intended to
improve the physics, NOT enable damage, so, yes, you are correct -- it
is still impossible to blow an engine. As far as engine damage goes,
there is NO damage available in the game, that that IS a problem, and
this is definitely something we will just have to live with. This is
something that I didn't even attempt to address with the Advanced
Physics Patch, though.

I am still waiting for some feedback from Razorworks on some of the AI
values -- with the "Hardcore" physics settings, the AI is WAY too
fast, and I'm having trouble finding the right values to adjust.
Without any online capabilities, we at least have to be able to
achieve AI that is competitive.
Once I get over that hurdle, I'll be releasing some "Hardcore" physics
files for testing purposes.

FWIW, I've found that the MAIN cause the seemingly "over-done" tyre
squeal is excessive front tyre scrubbing caused by dialing-in too much
steering input. Even with my modified linear steering values, I've
found that TIR requires quite a bit less steering input to go to full
lock than what I'm used to in sims like GPL. When I dial in LESS
steering input than I'm used to, the tyre squeal becomes MUCH more
subtle, so give it a try using more of a "delicate" touch and see if
that brings the tyre squeal down to levels that sound more correct.
If you have the full version, the "unlock all cars and tracks" utility
available on the Blackhole Motorsports site works nicely, and it gives
you access to some of the more interesting vehicles, including the
GT-class BMW M3, as well as the GTS and LMP cars. It's well worth the
effort, because the Audi TT and the Noble (the first two cars
available) aren't as entertaining as some of the others, IMO.
If you use the "unlock all cars and tracks" patch, I've found that you
have to first need to delete your "autosave" file in the following
directory:
C:\Program Files\Empire Interactive\TIR\Savedata\Autosave\
After deleting the "autosave" file, you then need to run the "trainer"
executable -- once you launch that, you will need to re-select the
"Total Immersion Racing All Access Cheat" under the "Trainers
Available" pulldown selection (that selection ALREADY appears in the
"Trainers Available" window, but you MUST hit the pulldown in order to
initiate the trainer). You might get an error message, but ignore
that. Then, with the trainer still running, launch TIR and once you
get to the main menu, press F5 -- you should then have access to all
the cars and all the tracks, and this will stick until you delete your
"autosave" file again.
Note that deleting the "autosave" file will also delete all of your
previous game settings (in-game music disabled, driving aids disabled,
etc.), so you WILL have to go through the various menus to reset your
defaults after youulock al lthe tracks. You'll only need to do this
once, unless you delete the "autosave" file again for some reason in
the future.
With the tyre sounds, though, remember that if they start to get
annoying, you're probably dialing in too much steering input, or
you're simply over-driving the car.
Hope this helps a bit! I've found TIR to be a LOT of fun -- with the
proper physics tweaks, the driving model reminds me a lot of SCGT,
only more sophisticated.
Enjoy!

I'll try sending you my autosave file (my computer is protected by
Norton AntiVirus, and my virus definitions are updated through 5/28/03
(the latest update from Symantec), so the file is guaranteed safe.
Check your e-mail (I assume you want no @valance dot spam, if I read
your address right).

LMK if the file arrives, and if it helps!
