Tucson Coyote Here,

Just a thought about GPL since everyone has started running that sim,
any spectacular crashes????

I had one (too bad I didn't save it, it was on a section of 'The Ring'
where i went airborne over the top of a railing and tumbled 10 times, (I
should have saved it! ARGGHHHH!) laterally! I mean the car tunbling
sideways 10 times and still landed upright (I was off the track, but at
least I didn't land upside down!)

Anybody got some crash footage???

Tucson Coyote!

I may crash em, but I keep coming back for more!

>Anybody got some crash footage???
I've had many a big smash in my time :-) I have 4 replays saved at the
moment of crashes. One happened in Mexico whenI was so busy
concentrating on the car next to me I forgot about the butt end of a
barrier I was heading for. *ouch*

Another happened in training at Spa where I momentarily looked away from
the screen going into Burnenville and by the time I looked up my
shattered car was flying along the track upside down and on fire.....

The third was in a race at Spa when I spun coming out of Masta and
slammed into that brown house on the right at 150mph. My car flew up in
the air, exploded and then clipped Sutees' Honda when it landed. *ouch
again*

And the fourth happened at Monza when I banged wheels with Clark going
through Ascari. My car somersaulted off the track and bounced off a
fence, rather nastily scraping my head along a guardail :-)
The car rolled along the track and when on it's side it was hit by Amon
who would have probably been decapitated if it was real(!). Bandini and
Surtees also got involved.

Cheers!

I have a good one... (some of you may have had this experience)

Rather funny, I was going through the usual newbie frustration and got
REALLY pissed about going off again in the Parabolica after being
punted in the rear...

So I decided to head backwards and see what I havoc could reek on the
rest of the field.

The field and I right after the Lesmos' and Jack Brabham (if I recall)
became a human helicopter after a rather large collision at 150 mph.

Little bug the physics model. After the head-on collision his car was
thrown, what appeared to be 30 feet, into the air where he hovered,
nose down, wildly spinning like a helicopter, for maybe 3 or 4
seconds, then crashing back down to the race course.

But we all know what a trooper he his... Immediately shifts into gear
and off he goes, oblivious to his own attempt to break the Formula One
time at altitude record.

BTW, the shadow also has a small anomaly. It stays the same shape and
size no matter the car height or angle.

I have the film if anybody is truly interested...

Well, there are webpages featuring crashes out there, but who needs
them? Personally, I do generate enough damage by myself.

Once, I got "Amon in the Sky with Ferrari", where a Ferrari got
propelled very high in the air over the 'Ring pitlane and stayed there
for minutes, spinning and floating like a satellite on drugs.
Incredible.

At Monaco, after a minor crash in the last U-turn, my car raced
backwards at 150mhp along the right side armco at the way to the
Chicane.

And there are many oportunities to leave the track on purpose and jump
over ramps, like at Rouen, Nurburgring, Kyalami, Zandvoort.

I have two crashes at Spa that are pretty good.

The first one i was coming out of Malmedy and clipped the bushes with the right
side wheels knocking out my steering. I proceeded to run up the bank, clip the
fence, flip end over end several times while gyrating like a top, and finally
smash into the invisible wall. Degree of difficulty for that vault- 4.6.

The second one i was messing around during practice running the track
backwards. I accidentally turned right (brain lapse) and rode up onto the
railroad tracks. When i tried to get back to the track i clipped the stone
wall (after Malmedy) flipped violently and landed upside down on the railroad.

I have two others but the damage was turned off in them so theyre not quite as
spectacular.

I've seen Parkes' Ferrari hovering around the eighth floor of one
of the buildings near Tabac at Monaco. Wreaks havoc for online
racing... "Did you see what I just saw?" :)

Been there, done that... It is possible to get to an unhealthy
altitude using that method.

Running the track backwards like that gave me the idea of trying to
launch myself up to land on the Monza banking on the short section
that's modelled at the overpass. [Sheesh, the things some people will
try to further the elusive quest of driving on the Monza banking!]

It took several attempts [actually MANY more than only 'several'],
because it was never a certainty that I'd meet an oncoming car at the
exact point required for this stunt. I finally succeeded in obtaining
a perfect head-on collision with just the right take-off angle and
trajectory.

There I was, sailing through the air in a gentle arc, lofted toward
the Monza banking. Yes! "Houston, the Eagle is approaching the
planned landing zone. It's just one small step for Man, one giant
leap for Sierra Papyrus. Touchdown is expected in 10 seconds, 9, 8,
7, 6 ..."

SPLAT!

Oh, darn! "Ahh, Houston, we have a problem here." There is a
vertical glass wall extending up from the bridge face. It is not
possible, using this approach, to get to the banking on top of the
bridge.

Bummer.

I was so bummed out by this discovery that I even forgot to save a
replay. However I did save three interesting screenshots from other
failed attempts.

One is a balls-of-fire flaming arc through the sky. The other two
show the results of a head-on crash just *after* passing under the
bridge [Jim Clark was a little slow in arriving at the agreed upon
impact site! I just can't find good help these days.]

At impact, the front of my car was torn off completely leaving the
driver visible holding only the steering wheel. The second of the two
images shows a closeup of the driver, from a viewpoint looking back
through the [detached!] steering wheel.

A millisecond after these two images, everything snapped back together
and the car took off, straight up into the sky. I didn't save a
replay of this either because, except for these two still images, the
rest was just like all the other head-on crashes.

See three images at <http://www.globalserve.net/~trauttf/gpl/>

I can beat that one. As I have a Watkins Glen replay entitled

Tucson here again extending this a bit further,

Been wrapping myself around trees, and sending myself spinning like a frisbee
all over 'The Ring' and now that I learned about saving the crashes, I have
them safely stored in my replay archives...

I think the best one that I have seen is one that was sent to me, in which
the fellow goes into the air and does 16 end over ends after losing his front
wheels and then adds a half twist after he hit the ground... A very high and
legitimate crash if I say so.....

Course the funniest one sent to me was by one guy who crashed, and
riccocheted all over the start finish secition of Spa, bouncing off the sky
and flotating up in the air like he was caught up in some sort of invisible
twister, before hitting the ground!

Course I have a slew of other (mostly mine) like flipping a Ferrari as I go
speeding by a camera (probably made the poor camera man do it in his boxers!)
And another where I flamed a car.....

But I am sitll looking to see if anyone can get thrown into the Bay at
Monaco, ala Ascari 1956, where the guy went airborne near the chicane, and
was launched out into Monaco Harbor!

Anyone done that????

No, unfortunately there is an invisible force field all around the bay. I
clipped the dreaded hay bales at the chicane and was launched toward the bay
but bounced off the force field in mid air. Too bad.

The easiest way to get a spectacular crash that I know of is the one I
found in the 'Glen demo. Coming out of the final turn and accelerating
towards the S/F line, where the timing board spotter stands, head at
full speed towards him and the other guy near by him. Plow straight
through them and the fence behind and you hit "something" which almost
instantly propels your car to tremendous heights, spinning around all
the way up (and down). Most times the engine catches fire as well,
although I have had some where the engine never caught fire until on the
way down. Weird. The windnoise you hear from inside the cockpit at the
heights you reach is a nice touch. <g>

I've a replay of a Ferrari blocking me in the last turn of Kyalami. I
slightly lost control of my car, drove through the grass on the left
side of the starting line straight, and hit a natural ramp. In one of
the TV Views, you just see my car disappearing behind some building and
the next thing you know, there is this car flying 10 meter above the
ground while spinning along its Z axis... very nice, especially as it
looked fairly realistic.

Should've saved one from when I was first learning the edge at
Curva Grande and got creamed from behind by Pedro Rodriguez.
We both burst into flames, and he went tumbling on top of the
guard rail. Impressive stuff.

The two favorite replays of mine include "Flyalami" where on my
first attempted lap at speed at Kyalami I missed the turn-in
to the final corner, getting onto the grass, and hit this huge
ramp which propelled me skyward. I landed on the front straight
and slid for like a quarter mile on my roll hoop. There are so
many sparks generated that even though it's only a 12-second
replay from a training session, it's almost as big as the replay
of a whole lap at Spa. The other is a replay of a spin at Monza
where I just kiss the guard rail with my left rear on the exit to
Curva Grande, and force the car to spin to avoid going into the
bushes on the left. As the car comes around, I turn the front
wheels in the opposite direction so they drag across the Tarmac
rather than roll and snap me into a second spin, and I keep on
the gas, and miraculously save it after just one spin, and get
no slower the whole time than 89 mph. It's quite impressive,
and amazing that I had the presence of mind to do that trick
with the front wheels to slow the rotation of the spin,
considering how fast it all happens.

>But I am sitll looking to see if anyone can get thrown into the Bay at
>Monaco, ala Ascari 1956, where the guy went airborne near the chicane, and

I'm pretty sure there's an invisible wall there, so it's impossible.

One favorite thing of mine to do, which I haven't saved on a replay
yet, is to go to the first (and best) jump at Nürburgring and tap your
brakes right at the crest. See how high you can get that tail end up!

Another favorite thing to do is to run a race or practice session at
Silverstone, and drive onto the Bosch bridge, then try to pounce on
the cars below! I haven't succeeded yet, but if I do, I'll save a
replay of it.

I did something like that at Spa. I tail-ended one of the AI at
Stavelot and was launched skyward, landing on top of another AI car.
He then proceeded to carry me "piggy back" all the way round to the
pits where he retired. I couldn't Shift-R as my car was still
"moving", so I just had to sit it out. I had a replay, but I think it
was culled a long time ago.
