That would be "Net Race Live," BTW -- an interesting pseudo-online
racer that inserts you into "actual" IRL races (or replays after the
fact) that pits you against in-car telemetry. The telemetry is used to
re-create the actual position of the IRL cars, allowing you to
actually "race" against the real race scenarios (for example, you can
do the last 5 or 10 laps of a race, to see how you would have done
against the real drivers).
It's a neat concept, very similar to the premise of some of the "Beat
the Heat" scenarios in NASCAR Heat, for example, but there are some
VERY rough edges. For example, the AI cars do not react in any way to
you; they plow over you if you get slow and continue on unaffected by
the incident, and they are not affected if you tap them or bump them.
It would be REALLY nice if they adapted the telemetry to some type of
AI algorithm to allow it to "sense" your presence and move accordingly,
but as it is, you can finish the race without causing an incident, but
if you have an incident, there's no way that your actions will affect
the outcome -- if Eddie Cheever won the race in real life, he will win
it in the Net Race Live replays unless YOU finish ahead of him.
That said, despite these flaws, it is pretty darn engaging. Makes me
wish the MGI people would do a NASCAR Heat-style IRL title -- which
could possibly occur, now that Hasbro has been bought by Infogrames,
who now holds the rights to the IRL and the Indy 500 after acquiring GT
Interactive.
Thanks for pointing this out, also -- nice to see SOMETHING from the
IRL being marketed, even if it's not what I'd really like to see.
Also FWIW, I think you can download the software from the Net Race Live
site (http://www.netracelive.com/), which will allow you to check out
some free scenarios. Apparently the version you saw actually allows
you to get the software without a download, and the purchase also
covers your sign-up fees, which makes it something of a bargain.
