Gday.
Im considering an engine swapo for my morris minor, currently has a Nissan
A14 engine and 4spd gearbox, disk brakes, coil overs, sway bars etc...
What Id like to know is, can I please get replys with 'honest' experiences
of using 10a's, 12a's or even 13b's, as an everyday driving engine. I
would indeed whack in the largest radiator and oil cooler I can fit, as I
understand the cooling problems from my brothers RX2 (13BT.,390+bhp. at
wheels).
Would you consider the engines given adequate radiator and oil cooler size,
a decent daily driver? Would considerable driving (commuting in australia
is really bumper to bumper, not here in Brisbane anyway...) by a no-no for
an engine with a tendency to overheat...Im thinking about hefty costs of
rebiulding a fuct engine etc...

Obviously daily driving would be sensible , not exectly 8000+ revs, just
whats needed...though I'd like an engine to be able to give it a good go
when wanted!!

any advice welcomed...

Simon....

are you talking aout a mini?? I wanted to do that.. but I was told it'd be
too much work to get it to rear wheel drive....
It would be cool though.. that is if it's a mini you're talking about!
I live in Brisbane and own a 13B NA in a series 1.. it's not too bad in
traffic.. little bit of work on the clutch but then I guess I'm not in
traffic that often... mines fine with regards to heat issues... Make sure
you get yourself a good oil cooler as well as the biggest radiator you can
find...

Good luck.. hope to see it driving around some day
Andy

That's a pretty standard way to improve the Morry. Cheap and very effective.

Stock engines are fine for daily use if you are reasonable with the throttle
and resultant fuel consumption. I've had several early rotarys which I've
driven day in-day out for years, most of them with some form of
modification.

Keep away from 10A's because of their age and scarcity/pricing of parts.
Best to use a carb equipped 12A (RX7 is probably best) or a 13B.

Stock RX radiator and external oil cooler should be fine. Remember you are
talking about a Morry here (lever type shocks and 50's suspension/body),
which will never be able to handle the sort of power your brother claims to
have.

Absolutely.

Adapt the rotary radiator and oil cooler (it's been done) and keep the
engine on the streetable side. Don't get dragged down the bridgeport path or
anything stupid.

Simple configuration would be a 12A or 13B with an extend port, exhaust, and
a 48IDA. Use a 5 speed gearbox and remember you have a pretty weak
differential. Ideally, have a stronger diff fitted such as a matching RX.
Once again, don't go ridiculous.

Don't forget a brake upgrade and make sure you get it done legally. It's
worth the extra cash to have a legally modded car, particularly if you
decide to sell it.

He's talking about the 50's era rear wheel drive sedan. Think Anglia and
you'll get a rough idea.

Near impossible on Mini's. It was done in some racing classes years ago but
that was with people with serious machining skills and a lesser requirement
on safety.

Its for a Morris Minor (1000 etc) Saloon 4 door its rear wheel drive, Disks
put on front Mitsi Galant Drums on back, Tele-Dampeners front (Monroe),,
same but with coil-overs and Jaguar parts used for mods on the back...Mini
Clubman seats in front and interior all with matched upholstery...current
Nissan 1400 engine, 4spd gearbox...

Try "Nick" at Nerang Rotary, He's usually got something lying around... I
don't have his number on-hand but it shouldn't be too hard to find.

I don't think he means a mini, my uncle used to have one not sure what year
it was though, they look like a small FJ. In fact I reckon you'd fit one in
there quite snugly. You'll have to use thermos of course on your radiator.
Probably won't fit the battery in the front either. You could probably use a
12A with a r100 rear if you're doing it cheap. Don't know how you'd go
fitting the gearbox in. Otherwise a narrowed rx7 rear with a series 5 turbo.
The only real problem I can see is high speed stability and any old
Lucas(a.k.a Prince of darkness) electrics.
That'd be a sleeper alright, all you need is the bowls hats in the back
window as well.
I'm no expert though, it'd have the purists cringeing but go to any rotary
shop amd they'll set you straight.
