Can anyone tell me the "standard" color for an acetylene tank? I purchased
an oxygen tank and an acetylene tank from an old racer who has retired from
racing and welding. The oxygen tank is green which is the "standard" color
for oxygen cylinders (I think), but the acetalyene tank is covered in
several layers of black, yellow, and even some white paint. I would like to
clean them up and paint them the "correct" color. I am just starting with
oxy-acetylene welding.
Also, can anyone point me to simple plans for a welding cart? Thanks.

I've had grey and red acetylene tanks...not sure if
there really is a standard color!

I use a cheap hand cart, with a chain to hold the
bottles in place, and one day soon (I said that 10
yrs ago) I'm gonna weld some tabs and a box on it to
hold the hoses and tips and stuff.

Personnally I would paint the acetylen cylinder the same color as its hose :
red. But I too have had both grey and red tanks.
I prefer keeping the grey color for Argon-CO2 (MIG semi-automatic) welding.
Then again, this is a personnal choice.

J. Savoie

Mine is gray, but red makes more sense to me. Flammable and red go
together. My mig gas is funny, I've gotten green, gray, and a blue one
once. It seems like every time I get a new bottle (exchange type deal) it's
a different color. I don't think there's any standard for that.

black, red and gray are the most common

(I used to own a welding supply wholesaler) There are no standard
colors. Green is sorta/kinda a common color for oxygen and orange
is for acetylene. Those are the colors we used. But my main
competitor painted his oxygen cylinders black with a white rim and
his acetylene cylinders yellow. Main reason is to detect if a
competitor is filling another service's tanks (which is considered
theft under Tn law.)

The only standard I know of that was semi-rigidly enforced is green
for medical oxygen and blue for medical nitrous oxide. Might be an
FDA thing or something.

The major companies (Air Products, etc) have standardized colors for
their products but no two agree for the reason I gave above.

Not true, some may be that colour, depending on distributor, but ours in
Hamilton, Ontario, Canada are Acetylene (Black) Oxygen (Green)

May depend on the quality of the oxygen and its intended purpose. Our gas
supplier lists "avaitors breathing oxygen" as well as industrial grade
oxygen. I really don't know the difference but the driver claims the
avaitors oxygen has more moisture in it to keep the flyboys from burning
their lungs on pure dry O2.
Seems logical the tanks would be a different color or at least have a
colored band around the cylinder.

in australia the standard is for red/burgandy colour for acetylene,
which makes sense when you think about it, and black for oxygen.
medical oxygen is black with a black and white check pattern around
the top.
