My brother finally bought an engine for his 57 Fiarlane.
IT is a 390 ford, holley fourbarrel.
I will be helping him put it in.

Is this a drop in ? I know it has been done before but...
Does it need new motor mounts/cross member for tranny??

Thanks for any hints!!

The FE series engines were not yet released to the public in 1957, so it
would not be a drop in. However, they were available for the first time in
1958 models, which is a car not too different from the 57. I suggest you
look to the 58 for the parts for your 57.

Yes, this is a straight drop in. I owned a '57 Ford and did this type
exchange back in 1968 - put in a 390 w/4 BBL. The mounts are in the correct
position, etc. What you will also need to do is to go with a 390 series
radiator also. This too was a straight swap for the old radiator I had for
my 312 engine which was originally in my '57.

You will not need a new cross member, etc. The '57 ford, while only going
up to a 312 cu in engine, had exactly the same mount setup for the 352-390
series of Ford engines which started being fitted in 1958.

I also dropped in a C4 trans at the same time. If you are going with the
automatic c4-c6 serier trans also then you can also use the automatic
driveline. The U-joints at rear will fit the '57 Ford rear end.

I suggest swapping for the larger radiator since the original v8 rad
(designed for the 292/312 engine series for '57) will overheat on hotter
days, heavy traffic, and/or towing.

One final suggestion - go get an oil pump from the 428 series to put into
the 390. Pumps more oil and is a straight bolt on modification to the 390.

Good luck and have fun.... the combo you talk about is a great one and the
'57 will then be a real "sleeper". I have kicked myself more than once for
selliing mine back in 1970 - but then getting married does strange things to
one's mind at the time.

Thanks Ed!
I recall a few swaps like this back in the 60s....My vorther and I had
two almost twin 57s - mine was the sleeper and had a bit of a cooling
problem in traffic! that was when I learned about thermostats helping
to cool!

I had a 312 with a special Isky, 11.5 Jahns, heads with Tasca Ford
valves (kind of light) and that beast would go! 7200 RPM shift points!
Ditto! Got married and sold it so....a little kicking and a little bit
glad....did ok on the open road but really needed 101 plus octane!!
thanks!!

ED,
one other question, what did you do about exhaust manifolds? Did you
use headers?
thanks

I had a '57 Fairlane that had a 4V 352 in it. I don't what kind of job
it was as it was in the car when I bought it. It had manifolds and
everything fit fairly nicely. BTW- 352 and 390-same basic engine. Later.
