I am interested in the year(s) of manufacture of vehicles which
do not require bi-annual smog checks in California. It was my
understanding that cars made prior to a certain year (about 196?)
did not have smog requirements at manufacture so do not have any
now. Is this true and if so what year?

I believe the year you are interested in is 1963 and on backwards. It
might go all the way to 1966 but I'm not 100% sure. Anyone else?

My '65 Corvair required no smog test when bought in April '95.
Said the DMV person, "Slipped in just under the wire." 30 Years old.

All cars that are model year 1965 and older do not require the bi-annual
smog check. I believe that they will still have to be smog checked when
the title transfers, though.
