1.0 Finding Out About the Neon
1.1 What's So Great About the Neon?
The Dodge and Plymouth Neons are Chrysler's entry in the
small-car wars. They appeared at dealers in the US in January 1994,
and seem to be pretty popular in spite of two early recalls.
Here are some (admittedly biased) opinions from rec.autos.misc
and the Neon mailing list:
Advantages:
* Good for-class acceleration
* Great mileage considering the acceleration
* Smooth manual transmission
* Lots of space inside (trunk space is average for this class)
* Superb handling, even on wet roads, with the 14" tires
* Distributorless ignition (DIS) -- prevents many problems
* You can check the engine computer yourself for many problems
* Returnless fuel injection -- safer and less parts to go wrong
* One of the best price/features ratios in its class
* Very distinctive look
Disadvantages:
* Wind noise from frameless windows (can be adjusted; see 3.2)
* Engine noise at high speeds
* Low torque at low engine speeds; you have to get used to keeping the
engine at 2000 rpm or higher if you want instant acceleration
* No reliability record yet
* Very distinctive look

The January 2, 1995 issue of Automotive News reports that Chrysler will
begin production of a new Neon Sport EX sometime in late January or
early February. The new Sport EX will be similar to the current Sport
models except that it will not have standard four-wheel disk brakes and
aluminum wheels. The rear brakes will be drums, and anti-lock brakes
will remain standard. The price will be about $500.00 less than the
current $13,567 for the two-door and $13,267 for the four door.
Note that this new EX sport will be configured much like that of the
original Sport before the 5 lug aluminum wheels and rear disc brakes
were added in late August 1994.
2.2 Rebates and Discounts (good only in the US)
Chrysler is introducing its "Customer Preferred Savings" program,
which provides for cash allowances or alternative Annual
Percentage Rate (APR) financing on select 1995 Dodge and
Plymouth Neon Highline and Sport model packages, through March
31, 1995.
The package discounts are as follows:
Highline: D package $400
F package $500
Sport: K package $600
Alternative APR financing is 4.9 percent for one to 24
months, 6.9 percent for 25 to 36 months, and 7.9 percent for 37
to 48 months.
Chrysler also offers a $400 discount to college graduates
and people enrolled in post-graduate programs. Check with
your dealer for eligibility.
2.3 Dealer Information
How do I find a good dealer in my area?
~~~~~~~~~~
Call the Chrysler Five-Star Dealers number, 1-800-677-5782. They'll
give you names/numbers of the dealers in your area who have earned
the Five-Star ranking. You'll then receive by mail a brochure
explaining how the dealers earned that designation.
Should I use Citibank Autovantage?
~~~~~~~~~~
John Gallaugher writes:
The folks I've dealt with have provided me with outstanding
service. Rick Neadom is the guy in factory sales. He's been
helpful, courteous, and informative. The final price the folks
worked up for me will charge me $50 under dealer cost. The
incidentals are $136 for marketing fees/gas/etc. and $100 for
title/reg plus 7.00% tax. If you don't mind waiting 12 - 16 weeks
for delivery it seems like a great way to save.
2.4 Miscellaneous Questions
Which Model Should I Get?
~~~~~~~~~~
Base: lighter
have to order Competition package to get 14" tires
best buy if you can get the handling package & better tires
Highline:
can get stiffer suspension, soundproofing, and 14" tires
in a package
Sport: ABS standard, so can actually be cheaper than comparably-
equipped Highline
What's an ACR model?
~~~~~~~~~~
ACR stands for American Club Racing. It is a package available
for the base Neon sedan and coupe, and is intended for those who
want to race their Neon in SCCA events. BTW, Chrysler will pay
contingency money to anyone driving a Neon (with appropriate
decals attached) to a top three finish in a variety of SCCA events.
The ACR is street legal. The ACR was originally not available with
a radio, or a rear window defogger, or A/C. All these have since
been added as options for the ACR Neon.
You originally had to be a Sports Car Club of America member to
order an ACR Neon (which is why dealers couldn't stock them), but
this restriction has been lifted.
The ACR package adds the following to a Base Neon (from the info
packet Dodge sent to its dealers):
Four Wheel Disc Brakes
Sport Front & Rear Fascias (same as on Sport model, but the hole
for the foglights is left empty)
Tinted Glass
Body Colored Grill Bar
Right Side Remote Mirror
16:1 Power Steering (so fewer turns lock to lock)
P175/65R14 Speed Rated Tires
Performance Ratio Manual Transaxle
14"x6" Aluminum Five Spoke Wheels
Improved Cooling Capacity
Sport Suspension Including:
Specially tuned front and rear gas charged struts
Specially turned front and rear springs
Front & rear sway bars
Tachometer (dunno why they put this here instead of above).
Where was this particular Neon made?
~~~~~~~~~~
Check the first number of the VIN.
1 United States
2 Canada
3 Mexico
4 some transplants (e.g., DiamondStar)
When will the Neon offer power windows and a sunroof?
~~~~~~~~~~
Power windows will probably be available late in the '95 model
year, although probably only on the front doors, not the rear
doors. Sunroofs are still an unknown.
Is the Neon safe?
~~~~~~~~~~
There was a discussion on the r.a.m and r.a.m.c newsgroups in Jan-Feb
1994 about the safety of the Neon. I haven't gotten a chance to look
up any figures yet, but apparently the Neon got an average rating in
a crash test.
If you're concerned, check out The Car Book, Kiplinger's Auto Guide,
and if you can find it, the US government crash test results. I'll
include figures as soon I can.
However, I'd also like to mention the one real-life crash that I
know about, in which Krzysztof Adamski hit a concrete guardrail
(at about 50 KPH, I think) and walked away with a chipped tooth
(from the airbag deployment) and a sore leg.
3.0 Keeping Your Neon Happy
***** Much of the information here is from the car newsgroups and
***** Neon mailing list, and since I can't verify all of it, I make
***** no claims about its validity. Let the driver beware.
3.1 General
Problems on the road
~~~~~~~~~~
Chrysler offers 24-hour customer roadside assistance on all Neons
for three years or 36,000 miles. This includes helping if you run
out of gas and providing a loaner car (or hotel) if you get stranded.
You should receive a CustomerOneCare card with your VIN on the back
and the emergency number (1-800-521-2779) on the front.
Goodyear tires
~~~~~~~~~~
The Goodyear tires on the Neon come with a book explaining warranty
coverage by Goodyear. One thing it doesn't tell you is that you must,
within 1000 miles, register the tire DOT serial numbers with a Goodyear
tire store for warranty activation.
How do I break in my Neon?
~~~~~~~~~~
Don't drive over 80-90 km/h for the first 1500 kilometers, or
55 MPH for the first 500-1000 miles. City driving is better
than highway driving to break in the car, since it gives your
engine more opportunities to rev at different speeds.
What should I expect when the ABS engages?
~~~~~~~~~~
You should get feedback in the form of an audible "chunk chunk chunk"
sound AND a strong pulsing of the brake pedal. If the ABS light does
not come on and you are able to maintain steering control, everything
should be fine.
Warning: Don't show off your ABS system to any friends until after the
break-in period, because it will create hot spots.
Hey! Why's there all this rust underneath my *new* Neon?
~~~~~~~~~~
Many of the parts underneath the car, such as brake drums, outer
edges of rotors, suspension arms, and steering linkages, are
not painted. This is completely normal, and the parts are not
likely to rust through and fall off.
3.2 Maintenance and Modifications
Can I get climate-control knobs that have see-through indicators?
~~~~~~~~~~
Your dealer should have this kind of knob - you can put them on
yourself by pulling off the cover that surrounds the controls.
The vent/temp/circ knobs are $2.75 (US) each, and the part number is
MK01RS6 (quartz) or MK01RF8 (driftwood).
For cars with A/C, the blower knob is $4.10 (US) and the part number is
MK02RS6 (quartz) or MK02RF8 (driftwood). For cars without A/C, the
blower knob is $4.35 (US) and the part number is MK98RS6 (quartz) or
MK98RF8 (driftwood).
What size speakers does the Neon take?
~~~~~~~~~~
According to the current Crutchfield electronics catalog (which
doesn't have a complete listing for the Neon):
Rear speakers: 6"x9"
Door speakers: 5.25"
What kind of parts can I get to modify my Neon?
~~~~~~~~~~
002 performance said that they had a guy in CA who had made a
header/exhaust for the Neon, and he is waiting for CA certification
before marketing it (got 49 states only). According to them, it
should bring the car SOHC to the DOHC level or better.
ASC (Emeryville, CA, USA) makes a sunroof for the Neon; a
power one (very much like those on Honda Accords), which
Sebring Superchargers said that they are working on a supercharger kit
for the Neon (probably the same one that they ue for the Miata at
6 psi). However, they said that it will be available (if at all)
only for the DOHC model.
Tel: (404) 457 6300
Which repair manual is better - the Chrysler one or the Haynes?
~~~~~~~~~~
According to a dealer serviceman, the difference is basically the
price; the Chrysler Manual goes into more detail, but the Haynes
should be enough.
Neon's shop manual is about four times the size of the Haynes.
For example, the Haynes lists the meaning of computer codes
without any other information, but the Neon manual has an
explanation of each code, plus theory behind the operation of
the engine and troubleshooting tips.
When should I change the oil for the first time?
~~~~~~~~~~
Some people think that a lot of metal particles and assorted gunk
collect during the break-in period, so they get the oil changed
at around 500-1500 miles, or 800-2400 km. (I actually did mine at
1000 miles, or 1600 km.) You should then follow the schedule in
your maintenance book (every 3000 miles, or 4800 km.).
A serviceman at a dealer seminar advised Neon owners to use Mopar
filters; he said that those are the best for Chrysler products.
Is brake noise normal?
~~~~~~~~~~
This problem happens on any car due to dirt getting into the brakes.
Although you can have a reputable dealer check it out, it's just
bad luck to get squeaky dirt in the brakes.
You can "bead in" brakes by being easy on them for the first
400 miles and then gradually making harder and harder stops.
My windows are leaking/loose/hard to shut. What can I do?
~~~~~~~~~~
First, don't let people shut the doors by pushing on the windows.
This is bad for the window alignment and the window cranks. Your
dealer can fix loose cranks.
In December 1994, Chrysler released a training manual and videotape
on how to perform Neon window adjustments, so if you take your car
in, make sure your dealer has seen it!
Here's how to tell when the windows are properly adjusted:
- the doors line up perfectly and are easy to close
- little wind noise at 55 mph/88 kph
- you can crank the windows all the way up and down easily and they
don't make cracking or thucking noises when you hit a bump
What should I use to wash my Neon?
~~~~~~~~~~
Meguiar's Soft Wash Gel, #7 Polish, and Carnauba Wax are very
good. Dishwashing soap, like Ivory or Dawn, is fairly mild
and works pretty well. Automatic car washes are *bad* for your
car's paint.
According to some people, you shouldn't wax your car until two
months after you buy it, because waxing too early doesn't allow
the paint enough time to oxidize.
At what pressure should I keep the tires?
~~~~~~~~~~
According to the sticker on the door, the 14" Eagle GA tires
should be inflated to 32 psi. The recommended range (according
to one dealer's service dept.) is 32-35 psi, which is where the
tire is flat on the road. 34 or 35 in the front and 32 in the
back improves the handling while not making the ride too bumpy.
However, if you pump your tires up too high you'll get better
gas mileage up to a point, but your ride will suffer and you'll
tend to wear out the center of the tire prematurely.
How can I touch up scratches/chips on my Neon?
~~~~~~~~~~
Chrysler sells bottles of touch-up paint. The parts department
can look up the paint code and sell you the correct one. If you
have the paint code any autobody supply place can make you a pint.
Paper matchsticks and small modeling paint brushes are useful, but
for very small chips you can use medium weight porous paper and
just dab a sharp corner of the paper with a small mound of paint
on it in the chip. For very thin scratches, you can use a thin
paper towel dabbed in paint and then just sort of pull it along
the scratch. For bigger scratches matchsticks or paint brushes
work better. Make sure to have a towel and some paint thinner
handy in case you really screw up :-).
ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS
~~~~~~~~~~
1. Cycle the ignition key ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON within 5 seconds.
2. Count the number of times the "check engine" lamp on the
instrument panel flashes on and off. The number of flashes
represents the code. There is a slight pause between the
flashes representing the first and second digits of the code.
Longer pauses separate individual codes. For example,
flash-flash-flash [pause] flash-flash represents the code 32.
3.3 Repairs
Rattling from front of car
~~~~~~~~~~
Check the plastic cover in the wheel well. Some people have had
a plastic holder fall out; this causes the cover to bang while
you're driving.
Also, check the hood prop; if it doesn't fit tightly into its
retainer, put some foam strips under/around it.
Glovebox light
~~~~~~~~~~
In some Neons, the glovebox light stays on all the time; fix
it by gluing an electrical box knockout to the glove box door
on top of the existing contact button.
Squeaky exhaust noise
~~~~~~~~~~
A squeaky exhaust seal (presumably where the exhaust manifold meets
to exhaust pipe) can emit a high-pitched noise; here are the parts
the dealer should replace to solve the problem (cost covered under
warranty):
(prices in $US)

The fuel pump on some Neons is very loud; people who have had the
dealer replace the pump say that the new pump is much quieter.
