I would think the Pontiac Grand Prix GTP would be a better choice. It has
the same 240hp engine. I would think the GTP would have a firmer suspension
and slightly better handling than the Regal GS. Also, I thin it looks
better.

That would seem to be the case. The GTP has received rave reviews --
handling & power. Quicker than the v-8 taurus sho for thousands less.
I am disappointed that the GP looks so much like the cheaper garnd am,
but not bad looking. I would expect the GS to be a bit more luxurous.
The GP offers a heads-up display & trip computer, not found on the
GS. The GS offers a power driver's seat, not found in the GP (if
the driver cares). Pricing is about the same.
While the GP should be a nice car -- especially at the price, it is
not as solid and quiet as the Riv which really is a solid car (as
would be the Aurora & new Park Ave). I whould like GS very much
if it were a small Riv! I will see when I get around to driving one...
btw, a Probe is not a sports car... and speaking of sports cars, that
new 'vette sounds really nice -- I think it's safe to call it a SPORTS
CAR!
and for under $40K, if you can find one -- well wait 'til the '98s are
out...

The Regal is quieter and rides better than the Grand Prix (at the expense of
handling). You may like the seats in the Regal better, and it also has a
little more rear-seat headroom. Styling is entirely subjective, the Regal
looks better to me.
Other choices:
Nissan Maxima SE - Similar in price, size and performance to the Grand Prix.
Best feature: you can get a manual transmission.
Dodge Intrepid ES - Larger and less expensive than the Grand Prix. It
handles better than the Grand Prix too. The Grand Prix is faster though.
All other sport sedans are either smaller and slower or more expensive.
Although the Regal GS, Riviera, and Park Avenue Ultra all share the same
drivetrain (supercharged 3.8), the cars are really not comparable. The Riviera
is a 2-door, not a sedan. It's also about $8K more than a Regal. The Park
Avenue is about $10K more. The Aurora uses a detuned Northstar V8 and is
almost $18K more than the Regal.
In addition to being much cheaper, the Regal is also by far the fastest and
best handling of the cars you mentioned. It also has more interior room than
either the Aurora or Riviera.

And not being a loaded luxo-tourer like the mechanically identical Regal
GS, the GTP would probably be a tad lighter, hence a little quicker. Also it
isn't limited to 108MPH because of cheap tires, like th GS is.
Aardwolf.
Actually, it is limited to 108, not because of the price or quality of
the tires, but because of their speed rating. Mind you, I don't
approve of this, and when my GTP finally arrives I'll do anything I
can to alter this, but it is the truth.
Performance figures I have seen put the two at basically a dead heat.
I personally like the looks of the Pontiac better (ergo, I am buying
one), but to each his own. The GP *is* available with almost as many
luxo-features as the Regal, plus the "EyeCue display" is kinda neat.

Yes, styling IS subjective and the new sports Regal looks like a fine car.
However, (and I don't usually pander to demographics), wasn't the
originator of the thread 26 years old? I think he would look a little,
well, ODD, in a Buick. I'm 28, and I wouldn't even consider the Regal
unless I was in my early 40's. This is one of these emotional things, I
guess.

Handles better ??? The ES is another very fine car, but I drove a GTP and
was absolutely PLANTED to the road. I've only been a passenger in an ES,
but it didn't feel anywhere near as tight. Maybe thats the 'passenger
factor' !!!
That's too bad. "Sleeper" cars can be a lot of fun to drive around in. How
would you feel about driving around in a Buick Grand National?
Oh my. I dont know about others but I was considering buying the new
97.5 Buick Regal. I am only 26 but I had owned sport cars. The one
It also has full time traction control, climate control, ...

Really if you all can wait till 2002 you will see a REAR weel Drive
Buick Again!!! Little bit of a wait but i think that it will be worth
it, Rumos i have heard tell of a 3.8 seriesII supercharged kinda like a
GN of the eighties. Nothing Else i can say but the 97 gs is a great car
for the money and buick always stands behind their products. Just my
.02$ worth
Kristopher
The GN wasn't exactly a "sleeper", with its total sport-blackout package.
The basic T-type, optioned out like a GN, was, however.
