Hi,

I need to get my 95 Acura Integra painted. I am looking for a decent
paint job that'll last for another 2-3 years. I have visited a Maaco
location (N.Lamar, Austin) and they gave me a quote of $800 with a 2
yr warranty. However I am looking for something in the $600 range. Are
there any other paint shops that do a decent job for a cheaper price? I
heard that Econo Body Paint does low cost jobs but I haven't heard
anything about their reputation. Please let me know.

Thanks,
Vamsi.

Decent paint job? Well, ya get what ya pay for.. A good job should
cost a lot more than $800, let alone $600. I was quoted $2500 if I
wanted to do my white Acura Integra..

Recommendation: Get an estimate from a well respected local shop. You
don't want your Acura to look like something that was rattle-canned.

quality depends on the painter more than the name of the franchise

I have to second that, had maaco look at my old F-150, It had some areas
that i knew would need special treatment (pant flaked off and some rust was
showing through primer...) they didn't seem to think it was any big deal...
helll to do it right they should remove ALL of the red paint (had evidence
of flaking in several areas reprimed, and THEN painted, but nope, they wre
gonna just spray over it all.... I took a look around their "finished" lot
and frankly didn't notice anything special about the paint jobs, didn't look
like new paint, more like a good wash, they didn't even bother to fill some
scratches and you could see little grooves through the new paint where the
deeper scratches must have been (salesperson did NOT want me to look at
other cars, something about "owners privacy", told him it was a deal breaker
if he didn't let me check thier crapsmanshit)... Decided to save my money a
little more and get a decent paint shop to do it, quote was for around 2200
(no bed paint, leave the campershell alone, go from two tone red/white to
solid white and a little detailing stripe where needed). In the end i ran
out of truck before i got the money and ended up with a new pickup, but i
wouldn't give Maaco the time of day, let alone the chance to screw up my
truck.

Yeah, be carefull when shoping the economy paint places like One Day paint
and body, or Maaco. A lot of those places you are going to get a cheep job
with inadequate prep work and then you find out that the warantee you bought
doesn't cover crap. On the other hand, You should be able to get a
reputable shop to do the job for you for under 700. There's a franchise out
here in so'cal I think they got bought up by a larger detroit firm, you may
know them, Earl Scheib's. Before their buy out they were just another cheep
paint job, now they do good quality body and prep work and real nice paint
jobs. They have warantees ranging from 1 year to 5 years against fading
peeling chiping or scratching. That includes any chips or scratches from
road debris or keys or shopping carts, etc (most shops won't include that
stuff in the guarantee) They have a ton of colors to choose from including
metalic and pearlescent paints. With your paint job you get a uv protectant
coat and a clear coat. I have 2 of my cars painted through them and I get
comments on them everywhere I go. Any time I get a nick from a road rock I
just take it in and get it prepped and painted for free. Took them 4 days
to do my car and the total package was $670.00 Good paint jobs and service
don't allways cost you an arm and a leg, but watch out for some of those
cheep shops.

Some economy shops give good paint jobs, it usually depends only on the
painter and prep guy and how experienced they are. I got an Earl Scheib
paint job many (!!) years ago and it actually turned out to be a good
paint job that lasted many years. It was very nicely done.

Watch out for some of those 'econo' places. My Bro used to work at a place
like that. He said they called it 'scuff and shoot'. For prep, they would
sand
it a bit (scuff), then paint it (shoot). He said they didn't even clean off
mud.
They'd just sand it a little and paint over. You definitely don't want a
paint
job from a place like that. Look closely at their other work and if you like
what
you see, give them a try.

A friend of mine used the Econo paint and body over on I think Burnet
road..I had sold him my grandfathers 1977 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight which he
bought new, and my friend had it a couple of weeks and rear ended a van on
IH 35, and when I saw the car I was heartbroken..The entire front end was
pushed in, the hood buckled, grill and headlights smashed. I figured the
car was totalled, but we towed it over to Econo, and my friend knew nothing
about cars so I helped..These guys found a new front end (off a Delta 88 but
only an Oldsmobile guy would know) installed it, fixed the dents my grampa
put in the car and repainted the whole car, all for under 1600.00..Albeit
not a show job, it looked pretty good and still does two years later..The
guys over there were real nice too...

Word. I got such a job when I was a kid, trying to pretty up my '73
Vega (first car) and when I got the car back they'd painted it with a
*leaf* on the hood.

I Understand they use their own brand of paint which keeps costs low so you may
have less choices for colour. Also, I really doubt they will paint fender lips,
door jams and sills and any other place that you cannot see from looking at the
car from a few feet away. Prep work is probably kept to a minimum as well since
that can get time intensive. If you plan to do it, you might want to do all you
can prepping it beforehand like masking off trim, removing wiper blades, etc so
they don't waste time doing a halfassed job of it. Dont forget to get
EVERYTHING in writing.
