I live in Los Angeles, California and am looking for someone to paint my
car. Is it OK to go the route of choosing a freelance car painter or
should I stick with a licensed autobody & paint? How do I choose a good
one?

Have you ever heard the expression you get what you pay for, well when it
comes to paint jobs that is the truth.

First of all a you have no recourse with a free lance painter. If he screws
up your car, in most cases you are stuck and it will cost you a lot more to
get it painted properly.

Stick with a reputable company. First and foremost ask them if they will let
you see your car after it is prepped and before they paint it, if they say
no, don't do business with them. Ask them what type of paint they use, the
best are Dupont and Sherman Williams. You need to know the difference
between paints, enamel, acrylic enamel, urethane, base coat clear coat and
then decide what quality of paint you want used on your car.

You can spend from a few hundred to thousands of dollars for a paint job.
Average cost of a decent paint job is usually around $2000.

Most importantly ask them for references and check them out.

Another words do your homework.

Speaking of paint.... Do any of you remember when Earl Schieb would paint a
car for $19.95?? $29.95 if you wanted two tone!

I don't remember the 19.95, but they wouldn't even wash the car before they
painted it much less sand it. Those people should be put out of business,
they use the cheapest garbage paint and are clueless when it comes to
prepping a car. I have heard they have even painted over emblems at times.

One thing about it, it is easy to strip their paint, usually a steam cleaner
will strip every bit of their paint off.
