My original Goodyear Eagle LS's on my 2000 Golf GLS 1.8T are getting pretty
worn in the center. This is mainly my fault for refusing until recently to
run them at 26psi as suggested. They handle horribly at 26psi, and only
marginally better at higher pressures. Anyway, I would really like put on
some larger wheels than the 15" ones that came with the car. However, I
can't really afford that anytime soon. But I'd like a little more rubber on
the ground. I don't want to sacrifice fuel economy or ride a great deal, but
would like a bit more cornering and breaking performance. So, I was
wondering would it be worth it to go to a plus zero size (a bit wider but a
lower aspect ratio to maintain the total circumference)? I can afford a bit
more circumference as my speedometer is registering about 1mph slower than
true speed for every 20mph (eg. speedometer says 63mph, true speed is
60mph).

Also, if I do decide to go to a wider tire, what would that mean using the
original spare on the unlikely event I should need it?

P.S. As a side note, any suggestions on a new wheel size? I was thinking
going to 16" or maybe even as large as 17".

**Have you tried the tirerack.com site yet? You can see different
rims/different sizes (15, 16, 17, etc.) on your Golf. You can even
have the proper color on the car. The site also fully explains
offsets, proper wheel diameter, etc. Give them a look-see. I'm
planning to upgrade my Jetta's 15s with some 17-inch rims and Yokohama
tires.
