The JH block from a 83-84 GTI is an easy upgrade, it gives you an extra 200ccs
and bigger valves. Good used engines can be had for under $500...
I don't really think any swap is exactly CHEAP, if you do it right- at a
minimum, I would consider new motor mounts, clutch/clutch seals, and a new
timing belt and tensioner as additional items that should be budgeted into the
swap. Also plan on new manifold gaskets for the exhaust.
Speaking of exhausts, you will find some easy extra horsepower there, even for
your 1.6- if you dump that single outlet manifold in favor of either the
dual-port earlier style/Techtonics downpipe combo- or a quality 4-2-1 (Tri-Y)
header. If the 1.6 is in good shape, you may want to try the exhaust upgrade
first, it won't be a waste when you upgrade to the larger motor...
The hottest set-up (within reason) is the later '93 up ABA two-liter block
with the JH head. That allows you to retain your CIS injection intact, and with
mild porting, this combo can run in the 150 hp range- which would really make
that Cabby fly-- but there again, this would not be cheap.
Rebuilding your present motor with larger slugs and stroke is an option, but it
is not a particularly cost effective one. Plan on spending upwards of a grand
if you go that route...
Hope this helps...

The 8V 1.8L is the most cost effective way to go.
Any mod that you do on the 1.7L setup, will do wonders once you install a
1.8L. Such as; an early 4 into 2 manifold, Techtonics down-pipe with 2"
exhaust.

Yeah. It's essentially a bolt up, although I would a thorough run
through the car (CVs OK? Clutch OK?, etc.) while the motor's out. No
sense waiting to crawl around under the car later when you can have 100%
access to all the other parts with the motor out!
While we're on the subject: The 1.7 has all of it's power at the high
side of the RPM scale. Does anyone know how to bring that down some?
Should I turn the cam a tooth (which way) and does the G grind cam (or
any other cam) bring the power band closer to the low end then stock?

Screw all that 16v, VR6, Turbo, and all of that other royal money-sucking
rich-boy magazine stuff (though it is cool)
What I am talking about, my friends, is a formula for serious and relatively
budget scootage!!

They're popular because they offer quality parts for unbelieveably low prices--
I've got a grocery bag full of receipts from Halsey, and have never been
disappointed-Great guys.
Their service department is also first rate.
They tell me that they do a limited mail order business as well- anybody
looking for the lowest price on a VW or Audi part would be doing themselves a
favor by calling Halsey @ (503)256-0182...
Also, if you are interested I can provide "plug and play" knock sensors for
this kind of engine. You can use the existing A1 ignition system, but I
don't recommend it because of the 10:1cr.
