I just upgraded an A2 8v gti to 10.1" front brakes, and now the pedal is
a bit less firm, due to the bigger front brake pistons. I have (AFAIK)
the 20mm master cylinder. Should I upgrade to the 22mm master, does it
bolt right up? And I use the car mostly for track events where there is
little vacuum assist, so is a master cylinder this big too firm without
vacuum boost?

I just upgraded my 91 Gti 8v to 10.1s also....Would have gone for the corrado
for the same price but wanted to avoid clearance problems with my bbs 15's. I
did the master cylinder at the same time and the 22mm is not a drastic change.
It does seem that the pedal is firmer but only when the brake pedal is pressed
very hard....I would recommend it. It bolts right in with 30 minutes time
including bleeding of the brakes....

I'd upgrade to the 22mm master. Did the 11" upgrade late last year, and the
bigger MC keeps up with the brakes pretty good, nice firm pedal. I just ran
the car at Lime Rock on Monday and I didn't even have to work the brakes
that hard. (Okay, the car doesn't have much power yet)

How can you tell the difference between the 20mm and the 22mm. Where do you
measure? Which cars come with the 22mm?

Well, based on both your comments, I bought a 22mm master cylinder ( out
of a 94 golf) Dropped right in. Nice firm pedal. Track day tomorrow.
If anything, the pedal is a bit firm, but it did seem atoo soft with the
20mm. Thank you both for the opinion. I'll tell you how it worked on
monday. BTW the car has a stock 1.8 gti motor and shine suspension more
or less prepped to a rulebook legal ITB car. Hawk blue 9012 front pads.

Turn 3 at Loudon should be less exciting, now...

The 22mm have a 22 cast into the side, the 20 have a 20 cast into the
side. Also 22 p/n starts with 357, 20mm starts with 191. 22 is
available on 1990 and later golfs, afaik, as well as 1991 jetta gli. Got
mine off a 1994 golf.

AN update after a dry track day...

Now I am overbraking in a big way, but the brakes and balance are
spot-on. Thanks to those who offered input. Glad I wnt with the easy
to modulate ( yes I locked up the kumhos) 22 millimeter master cylinder.
20mm would have been too little feel, and too much mechanical advantage.

I had a wet and dry track day at Lime Rock last Monday. The big brakes and
22 mm master cylinder felt great. Had it been drier longer I would have
tested them more, but as it was it just took light pedal pressure to scrub
off a lot of speed in a hurry. Good to hear your's worked out.
