A friend has some photos of a red Porsche driven by a beautiful
blonde near where he lived with a plate that read:
FUKD4IT
He reported that when he saw the car again several months later
it had new regular plates. The California DMV initially didn't check
the meanings on personalized plates when they first came out but
later started having applicants explain the meaning. If they didn't
like it (or believe it) they refused the plates. They later audited
all existing plates and recalled any that they thought were
offensive or had hidden meaning.

On my 92 GTi I have Euro license plate on front that says A2-1781cc,
and I think it looks pretty cool, since only VW fans will get it...
We get seven in Illinois, and a number makes it a personalized plate
(cheaper) rather than a vanity plate.
We tried, but all were taken:
MOMS VR6, 7TH VW, GLX VR6
Have seen:
BAN 55, NEUN ELF (on a 911, of course), POOR SUE (on a Mercedes 450SL)
SHO NUF, OH ECOLI, etc., etc., etc.
Good Luck,
DK

I read a few years ago where a man had difficulty obtaining "69" in
California for his 1969 Porsche 911T.
My Nevada plates from several years ago were "nnn FCU". As this also
stands for "Federal Credit Union", I guess these weren't deemed offensive.
In Germany, there are no vanity plates, to my knowledge. However, I'd
seen, e.g. "FD - KD911" on several 911's (which are equally rare and
expensive in Germany). The affluent have connections...

There are indeed no true vanity plates in Germany because the first one
or two letters stands fro the city or region that the car is registered
in. Normally this is followed by another letter or two and then some
numbers. You can request a ceratin sequence of these letters and
numbers provided it hasn't been taken. Manufacturers seem to get dibs
on all the good ones.
This is very analagous to our own FAA's airplane registration numbering
system. All US registered civil aircraft have a "number" that starts
with the letter "N", followed by at least 1 number, followed by zero
through two letters. Again, no real "vanity" numbers, but you can
request a certain "legitimate" combination if it is not currently in
use. In this case, airlines seem to get dibs. Look at the numbers on
commerial jets, it's interesting to see whe owned them when they were
new. See a number that ends in EA? Used to belong to Eastern Airlines
(the real one, not the new startup). PA was Pan Am, etc.

'97 GTI-VR6, PA plate: "UWE ROSS"
'66 Aero Commander "N2935T" <- random, it was born with this number
I've got 'A 9 VWG' on my GTI (UK). Private plates in the UK are a real
big thing these days! you can pay anything from £99 to £50,000!! (GB
POUNDS!!) Mine was £300. These are some examples of GTI plates I've seen
in the UK:
G60 DUB
A1 DUB
B16 DUB (This is on the famous VR12)
GTI 16V (This is really GTL 16 Y but the font had been changed to make
it look like GTI 16V)
N6 VAG (Club GTI (UK) secretarys VR6!!)
A LO 16V (This 16V GTI had been lowered by 80mm)
A11 G60 (This is A 11 GG0 and the seconf G was made to look like a 6)
People tend to play around with the numbers and letters to make words,
the Police have a tendancy to nick you these days though for this, and
for fonts that are not the leagal one. I think a private plate helps
make the car!!!
Ashley.
I don't know about Vanity, but I got a "personlized" license plate that
would confuse the ticket giver.
I got:
00O0001
Now you ask what's so special about that? Well, the trick is that some of
the letters are really "zero's". Sorta of scrambled.
I haven't gotten a letter for a ticket yet. I never pay them. Works out
really well. Please, let's not start with " you should pay for tickets,
etc..."

> In Germany, there are no vanity plates, to my knowledge.
Well, they cannot be configured in any way you like. The first part is
fixed, because it shows the town or county. This part are 1, 2 or
3 letters. The second part are 1 or 2 letters, then 1 - 4 numbers.
The number of letters and numbers must be within certain boundaries.
An example:
I have on my Multivan: WÜ R 5528
The first 2 letters stand for Würzburg, because I live there.
As I live in the county, not in the city of Würzburg, I have 1 letter
and 4 numbers. All other combinations are city only.
Which letters and numbers are in the last parts can be chosen.
The difficulty is that in most cities it is hard to find a good
meaning that matches all those boundary conditions.
I know, we germans manage to complicate everything. And we are
specialized in bureaucracy.

I saw a picture in Playboy a few years ago (I read it for the
articles?) of a black Porche 911, plate FÜ CK 911. The caption said
that the plate had been revoked soon after the picture was taken.
