My 4x6 metric speakers blew out in my '81 Rabbit Convertible.
Do you know where I can buy replacements?
Thanks in advance.

Call Crutchfield's 1-800 number. Their catalog is
pretty comprehensive. I'm pretty sure they carry
the 2 or 3 manufacturers that make a 4x6 metric in
their catalog. (Nice quality stuff too)
They probably have a web page by now with alot of
info on it... can anyone confirm??

I just checked out their site. They have a great online catalog, but
they didn't have any 4x6 speakers for the rabbit.
I 'identified my vehicle' and looked for speakers, but their server only
showed me round speakers. I checked out the whole product line and they
do have 4x6 speakers, but none of them were suggested for the rabbit.
Do any of you installers know what types of 4x6 speakers fit in the
rabbit? ('81 convertible)
Thanks

It won't mention your Rabbit specifically (usually
older vehicles are not listed) but ANY 4x6" metric
will fit. Heres are the ones I found from their
site:
Kenwood KFC-4625C 4"x6" Metric Speakers
Pioneer TS-A4605 -- 4"x6"/4肺6"m 2-way
I used a Panasonic speaker in my Cabby, don't
remember which number it was though, (bough it 6
years ago).
Hope this helps...

Thanks for the tip! I'll give them a call.
I'd still like to go over some of my more radical ideas with someone
who's interested (and preferably has a rabbit too).

I found that surfing their site was less helpful than calling them and
talking to someone. For instance, when I identified my 88 GTI, the server
helpfully informed me that nothing they had would fit my car. Yet, for the
record, I have Pioneer TS-879? 3.5" in the dash and Pioneer TS-8602? 4x6m
in the rear (printed catalog specifically mentions that these fit VWs). And
as of last week, a Panasonic 4x40w CD receiver in-dash (6 3/8" deep),
Panasonic 6-disc changer between the left rear seat and wall, Kenwood 120w
mono sub amp under passenger seat, and SAS Bazooka 8" behind passenger
seat. By the way, Crutchfield has these last-years-model Bazookas on sale
for $99 for the 8". The salesdude even was able to tell me that I could
remove the rear support bracket on the defroster duct for another inch and
a half of depth - which I had figured out myself from inspection, anyway.
But I didn't need to.
I'm pretty happy with the new stuff, except the changer seems to skip more
than it should (which would be not at all). I lost only a little bit of
cargo space, i.e. right rear passenger's footroom, but since I usually have
the back seat down to carry bikes or skis this is not a problem. Besides, I
have enough slack on the Bazooka's wire that I can move it to the rear if I
put the seat up.

Yes, I can verify they have some good stuff, their Polk MM 4x6 plates are
awesome. If they still carry them... They sound very smooth, tight, and
handle lots of ower. Crutchfield also carries infinity, which I'd
recommend their Kappa series. Good prices, too - give them a try </end

And
Happened to see my speaker boxes in the garage on the way in the house
tonight. The fronts are indeed the TS-879, while the rears are the TS-4602.
Listed in the Crutchfield catalog for $54.95 and $59.95, respectively.
Other 4x6m's they have listed: Infinity 4612, $49.95 (on sale!); Kenwood
KFC-4625C, $69.95 (they're new!); Kicker 460i, $89.95; Pioneer TS-A4605,
$99.95 (specifically mentions they fit Golfs).
No opinions on any of these speakers except the ones I own, which do the
job just fine but are not of course the world's best.

forgot to mention the big bumpers in my brag .sig
I've got Boston Acoustic 4x6s in my Scirocco, which I'm pretty sure has
the exact same grille and speaker hole. They're model CX7E, and I got them
for $70/pr. The E is important, that means they fit european cars. The
speakers sound great for 4x6s. I liked them much better than several other
brands of 4x6 I've listened to or owned, including Alpine, Kenwood, and
Pioneer.

What are the RMS and peak ratings on those?
I used to have Boston Acoustics also but they burned out (I run high
volume with the top down).
--
Its rated at 25 watts nominal, 50 watts peak.
Freq- response 70-20,000 Hz
4 ohm impedance
Sensitivity (1 Watt/.5meter) = 95 dB
With the power from my deck(35Wx4 Alpine), they still sound pretty loud
with the windows down, but since my sunroof still needs some work done, I
haven't seen how they sound with it open. I've been cranking mine a bit
lately(just got the deck, had to try it out:)), and they seem to handle the
power just fine, although a high pass crossover that would cut the sub 100hz
or so freqs would probably be a good idea. I'd recommend this with any 4x6
though, most don't seem to be designed to handle the role of subwoofer:).

I don't know as to how this is true.... in my 82 cabby I bought a set of
Jensons and later a set of Cerwin-Vegas. Both of them and all other 4x6
speakers that I saw would not fit into the stock speaker grille (which
protrudes out of the door).
Solution: get out the tin shears and the band saw!! Butchered the hell
out of the speakers to get them to fit, I had to cut almost every peice of
the metal face plate off. And the Cerwin-Vegas had a large magnet behind
them and I needed to saw out the opening in the door to fit them in, and
grind the inside of the speaker covers to fit them as well.
It sounds like a farmer's job, but it looks clean and stock from inside
the car, and the Cerwin-Vegas sound great!
If there really is a replacement speaker that DOES fit without surgury,
I'd like to know!!

You have to be sure to specify 4X6 metric. The mounting for this is
completely different from a regular 4X6.

It did let me choose '81 rabbit convertible, but it didn't give the
correct recommendations. I called on the 800 line as suggested and the
salesman told me the two models that will fit.

I spoke with Clay at ext. 214 and he seemed to know ALOT about the
products.
He said that not all 4x6 metrics fit the stock grill because the grill
is flat and flush and many of the replacement speakers have a protruding
tweeter.
He said the two speakers they do carry are as follows:
Pioneer 4605 2-10W RMS 50W max $ 99.99 2 way 89dB
Sony 4623 10 RMS 50W max $109.95 2 way 89dB
Boston Acoustics also makes replacements -- that's what burned out on
me.

...and you have to specify flat flush grill....
-- Sam
As he said, you'll have to *CALL* to get the specifics. If you are
looking for 4x6 speakers for the VW line, you have to make sure you buy the
"metric" version. The standard 4x6 speakers are too large around the
mounting area, they have to be trimmed. The "metric" versions have a smaller
mounting ring and tabs to facilitate proper mounting in the smaller VW 4x6
areas.

I spoke with the knowledgable sales rep and he said that most of the
speakers don't fit because the stock grill sits flush against the
speaker and that the speakers have protruding center components that
require a curved grill.
The only speakers that fit are those that specifically mention the golf
or rabbit.

Are these the same as the 707s?
The 707s I had were only rated at 20W max and blew out. Are these rated
higher?
