I have an 85 Vanagon and brake fluid is leaking out from under the dash
onto the drivers side floor. It is a slow leak but I can't seem to get
to anything to fix the leak. Is there some access panel or something
I'm missing to get to all the brake fixtures behind the dash? Any help
would be appreaciated.

Presumably you know that you can remove the instrument panel cover and
access the brake fluid reservoir? If not, reach to the back of the
cover and pull up and forward. <pop> It comes off. Now you should
see the reservoir right there. You can move the instrument cluster
with a couple of screws and the electrical connections. If you're
going to do the latter, I recommend labeling the wires.

Trace the lines down. I haven't had to do much with the brake system
on our '87, but presumably the lines go straight down. You may have
to take the front grille off, but then if that's where the leak is, it
wouldn't drip on the driver's side floor.

Like someone else said... pop off the instrument/cover to gain
access to your reservoir and master cylinder. You might have to take the
instrument cluster off completely... don't forget to
disconnect/reconnect the speedo cable.
If your Van has a standard transmission... it is more likely that
your clutch master cylinder is leaking.... access is gained from under
the pedal cluster. 2 mounting bolts, one hydraulic fitting and one fluid
feed line (push on).
The clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder (at tranny) have a
tendency to leak before the brake master cylinder.

If I was taking a guess I would say you have a manual transmission and the
clutch master cylinder is leaking.
The bottom of the clutch master cylinder is visible in front of the clutch
pedal. The cylinder is held by two 13mm bolts. one hydraulic line is
visible near the bottom of the cylinder.
To replace the clutch master cylinder loosen the hydraulic line and
remove the two bolts. lower the cylinder and remove the "rubber" hose
feeding the cylinder and drop it out the rest of the way. Reassemble in
reverse order and bleed. Simple eh ;-)

Your master cyl is leaking. Its fun to replace. The reservoir is in front
of the speedometer(the cover snaps off), and the cyl is above the brake
pedal, follow the fluid.

I have an 82 Vanagon that came to me leaking brake fluid from behind the dash. My problem seems to be that the brake fluid reservoir is simply pressed into the top of the master cylinder with two rubber grommets providing the seal. If the grommets get soft with age or improper brake fluid (I think newer DOT 4 and 5 or silicon brake fluids may deteriorate the grommets) the contents of the brake fluid reservoir leak out past the grommets until the reservoir is nearly empty. The brakes still work as enough fluid remains to keep air from entering the brake circuits. I replaced my grommets which seemed to solve the problem for a time but the leak has returned. I haven't gone back in to check the issue as I've been working on other issues. The van is roadworthy again now in all other respects so I'll be checking this issuemoutmand will report back what I find.
