My 2002 VW 2.0L engine drinks oil. The oil pressure sensor lit on my
way to work last week. I check and the car was out of oil. I was
almost due for an oil change (almost 5000 miles), I thought they
forgot to fill up the oil last oil change and it was only the oil from
the filter in the car or something... I called my dealer, Donaldson
VW on Long Island and I was told some 2.0L uses a bit of oil, totally
normal, just add oil. The car is 15000 miles and it already uses 4
quarts every 5000 miles! How will I ever be able to sell the car? I
cannot stright face say it is normal oil consumption when I will sell
it! I will get that consumption in writing at Donaldson VW. I am not
the only one in this situation. The repair manager (John Durkin) at
Donaldson VW told me he already did about 60 oil consumption test for
customers who complained. None were above the limit of normal
consumption (3/4 quarts / 1000 miles)... This is a known problem
then. What am I supposed to do? Class action lawsuit? Is there
something done? Who should I talk to?

Thanks for the help.

P.S. If you have a 2.0L engine check you oil! After the 10000 miles
oil change they told me to do the oil change every 3000 miles. I
followed the VW manual and waited for 5 000 miles, they wanted to
cover up the oil consumption (I suppose) SO CHECK YOUR OIL ON YOUR NEW
VW. I did not, it was a new car...

Mmmm... I'm pretty sure I've read in here that <1L/1000mi is decent.
Search the archives.
I found a few comments on this.

"1 Liter or almost 1 US quart for 1000 miles isnt too bad Mercedes Benz
allows
1-2 quarts for 1000 miles Probably valve seals. May need a valve job in the
future. But I wouldn't worry unless you get to 2 quarts in 1000 miles and
Blue
smoke ALL the time!
Keep an eye on that oil!!"

"I spoke to the dealer
regarding my concern which I discovered around 3,000 miles from new. He
said
that this was typical for jettas until around 30,000 miles and then it would
stop. "

And it does all depend on how you drive it, where you live, what weight
you use...

The industry standard is 1 litre/quart per 1600km/1000 miles.

Not that I'd be happy with this kind of consumption myself. My 2.0 requires
less than half a litre added after 5000 km/ 3125 miles.

FYI: I use Mobil 1 synthetic and I change the oil every 10000km/ 6250 miles.
The manual actually recommends changes every 15000km/ 9375 miles. The car is
a '99 2.0 Golf (A3 chassis).

My 95 2.0 only starts eating oil after about 3,000 on a change. Then it
usually goes about 1/2 qrt before it's changed at 5,000. I don't think
i've ever added oil, and the first two years i only changed it every
7,500 because it was free.

several 2000-2002 model 2.0L have this problem due to poor seals that VW
does not seem to recognize, next time you go on a long road trip (<1000
miles), be sure to start the oil consumption test, then during these miles
drive teh car really hard and at high speeds, it will probably drink enough
oil that they will replace the engine, having said that my 19995 and 99.5
2.0l don't drink much at all and i only change every 10-15k miles, i have
heard that switching to synthetic, like i did after the first few changes,
helps

My 2.0L has used less than a quart in the last 3000 miles. One thing you may
want to try is to use a thicker oil. Look in your owner's manual and choose a
heavier, but still recommened, weight that is suitable for the necessary
temperature range.

It sounds like something is not right here. I drove a 2.0 for 2 1/2 years,
and never dripped or burned a drop. I put 50,000 hard miles on that car,
changing oil every 5,000 miles and using only Mobil 1 10-30 with genuine VW
filters. When I would check the stick at intervals, it was always right
where I left it, with no noticeable consumption. Because of this, I assumed
that all modern VW engines must be this way, and I was very impressed. I
used to own American, Japanese, Italian and Swedish cars, and they all
'used' some oil, but my Jetta never did.
It sounds like you got a lemon (hey, every factory makes one now and then),
and the dealer is telling you it's common so you won't try to make him take
the car back or do major repairs for free - which is exactly what you should
do!
Good luck,
Chris

My 2002 Jetta 2.0 also seems to be using quite a bit of oil. It is at the 10,000 mile mark right now, and I thought it might be
something that would get better, however, it does not seem to be improving.

I check the oil every 2 weeks or so (which equals about 700 miles) and it always seems to need at least half a quart.

Not happy about this, but we'll see what happens. None of my other VW's, including a 95 2.0 have ever, at any point in their lives,
used this much oil. This includes my 79 with 290,000+ miles.

This, of course, is no help to you but my 90 Jetta was going through 1
quart every 40-50 miles near the end of its life. I had to keep a
case in the trunk at all times. This didn't last long as the engine
finally blew on it and I gave the car away. What a polluter!

Normal to consume oil? B.S.
My 97 cabrio with over 70K does not burn even a drop of oil!

Agreed...................VW has been experimenting recently with low tension
rings
etc, all designed to get them a better fuel mileage rating with the EPA in
the US.
All the old ( 70's and 80's ) VW 4 cylinder water cooled engines had bullet
proof bottom ends.
They had problems, like many others, with valve stem seals but they new how
to design a
piston /bore combination that would last 200,000 miles. Like so many
companies today, the bloody bean counters have had too much influence and we
collectively get stuck with their experiments.
For VW to say that 3/4 quarters of a quart in 1000 miles is
normal/acceptable
is just plain dishonest. Young drivers will now start thinking this is the
norm.

Thanks all for your replies. I don't have much to fight against the
dealer, I thought someone would know something about laws or something
I could do. There is nothing on oil consumption in the manual, except
the sentence about checking your oil and if it is low, to add oil,
with a nice drawing of the oil stick measurement.

There must be something about what a customer expect when he buys a
car. There is nothing in the manual either that says when I turn the
steering wheel to the right the wheels will go to the right! This is
implicit. I betcha VW would tell me it is normal that the car is made
to go left! And I couldn't say much, as there is nothing in the car's
manual about turning right...

Our 2001 Jetta with the 2 L engine uses about a quart every 1500-2000 miles,
which VW says is "normal." We now have about 12,000 miles on the car. Some
folks have said that the usage will drop over time. If it goes up, we'll fight
for a new engine, which some people have received. I've read that the piston
rings may have not been installed correctly in many of these cars.

it consumes as much as my 91 Jetta, with 240,000 miles on it. sound
definitely like stem seal not corrected installed, or damages. Do you see
blue smoke at cold start and accelerating?

cheers

I own a 2001 Beetle GL 5-spd with the 2.0 liter engine, 36,000 miles.
My engine took until 25,000 miles for it to fully break in. I check
the oil more frequently than the owner's manual recommends.

The oil consumption now is approx. 1 quart per 5-6 thousand miles. At
the 5000 mile mark, I switched to Mobil 1 synthetic 5W-30, and the oil
consumption was at its worst at about 1 quart per 1000 miles, which is
expensive at $4 a quart. The factory fill oil is 5W-40 according to
the owner's manual. At 10,000 miles, I switched to Texaco Havoline
5W-40 synthetic (the only 5W-40 I could find locally), and the oil
consumption was cut in half, and it has continued decreasing to its
current level. I take cross country trips, and at 80 MPH, the engine
turns at nearly 4000 RPM. I suspect this helped the oil control rings
to break in, as the engine turns much more slowly for me in city
driving. I have no proof of this suspicion.

My last oil change was in Utah (I am from Florida), and I was able to
locate Mobil 1 synthetic 0W-40, which has worked well for me. My
owner's manual says to check the engine oil level after every fuel
fill-up (I highly recommend you start this practice if you plan on
keeping your VW). The manual also recommends 5W-40 motor oil, but
says 5W-30 may be used if you cannot find 5W-40. I do not know what
the 2002 manual says, but I suspect it is similar. I highly recommend
you use only 5W-40 or 0W-40 motor oil in your Jetta if this is in
agreement with your owner's manual.

Prior to the Beetle, I owned a 1995 VW Cabrio with a 2.0 engine, which
I sold when it reached 100,000 miles. The car was still in fantastic
shape in all respects. The Cabrio consumed about 1 Quart per 3000
miles during the entire time I owned it.

I highly agree with you to document your oil consumption at the
dealership by doing the oil consumption test. I was less concerned
because my car (model year 2001) has the shorter 2 year bumper to
bumper waranty, but the longer 100,000 mile powertrain warranty.

For me, checking the oil in my car is a pleasure, but I understand
that for many people, it is a nuisance.
