I have a Corrado, and the bonnet ('hood' if you're in the US!) is stuck
in the closed position. There are 2 catches that secure the bonnet in
position, one at the left and one at the right. The cable seems OK,
because the left hand catch opens OK. But the right side catch won't
open at all - so neither will my bonnet!
And my water bottle is empty now!
Please help! All suggestions considered...

This is a common problem. I don't know if I can explain it well enough but
I may be able to get you pointed in the right direction. There are two
hinges that each catch is part of. They are long thin bars that extend part
way down the sides of the radiator support. If you look up under your bumper
(I'm not sure but you may have to remove the bumper to see them.) they are
clipped into the radiator support right underneath the holes where the
catches are. You need to find the right catch bar and twist it with some
pliers. If you twist it hard enough and in the right direction the catch
should pop.
Now before you think you're done and close your hood up again you will want
to adjust the cable so this doesn't happen again. If you look under the top
edge of the radiator support near the right side hood (bonnet) catch you
will see that the cable passes through a sleeve with a little locking bolt
on it. Mark the present location of your cable compared to the sleeve,
loosen the bolt, then pull the cable farther through the sleeve. Tighten the
bolt back up and make sure with the mark you made that the cable is indeed
pulled further through. (It is hard to pull through and sometimes slips
back, that is the reason for marking it, so you are sure you have actually
pulled it further through the sleeve.) I also took some molybdenum grease
and lubed up the two catch bars the whole length of them to make sure they
moved smoothly. Now close the hood and test the operation. You may have to
do this one or two more times to get this to work right but once you get it
right your hood will open much easier than it did before.
If you need more info go to www.vwvortex.com and go to the Corrado section
of the forums and ask for help. This is the best place to get Corrado (or
any other VW) questions answered.
Good luck,
