Help,

I replaced the power steering rack on my 87 Jetta and was getting rushed as
I was putting the lines back in (it was getting dark and wanted to get the
job finished). I ended up cross-threading the rack's threads that accept
the high pressure fitting.

Any suggestions to repair the threads? Remember there is barely any room
to manuver in there (definitely not enough for a drill) and I haven't seen
many taps that run that big (the diameter of the fitting is at least 15mm).
If a tap that size does exist, where can I find it?

tia,
-Dave

Several things first:
1. Did you strip it COMPLETLY, or just a little on the first attempt?
One or two threads?
2. If, (a VERY BIG "if") it *only* stripped right at the start of the
threads in the p/s body and no damaged threads are showing on the
fitting, you *may* be able to align the fitting square to the hole
and force the fitting past the bad threads, and save a LOT of extra
work. I saved a p/s unit that I was rushing to get finished due to
cold, dark,tired,fed-up (working on my wife's Dodge) and did the EXACT
SAME THING. Put the fitting in the hole, square to the hole, then use
a wrench behind the fitting slightly larger than the supply line to
guide the fitting into the hole.
3. If the fitting is stripped, go to your favorite parts haus and get
a new supply line. ( Check carefully, your fitting usually strips
first). One thing, I only got one try at fixing my problem, you will
probably have one shot also. If the hole is stripped a *LOT*, please
don't try to clean-up the threads. Small and/or large metal particles
could drop inside the body and wear out your pump and rack again.
4. Check things out carefully, you could get lucky! BTW, any further
stripping usually means another p/s unit. :(
5. Any other info,NG'ers?

Good luck,
Dave (another one)
