The different generations, as I understand, allowed for different changes
to many aspecs of the models.
Maybe someone else would shed some light on this with the years of the
generations as the exist.
Hope this helped.

a1,a2,a3,a4 are platforms that a number of VW models are built on.
North American models:
a1 = Rabbit, Rabbit Convertible, Cabriolet, Scirocco (both body styles),
Jetta (to 1984)
a2 = Golf (1985-1992), Jetta (1985-1992), Corrado
a3 = Golf (1993-1999), Jetta (1993-1999), Cabrio (1993-current)
a4 = New Beetle (1998-current), New Golf (1999), New Jetta (1999),
Golf (2000-current), Jetta (2000-current)
Note the existence of both a3 and a4 Golfs and Jettas in the 1999
model year (the a3 versions were sold early in the model year, and
the a4 versions were sold later, labeled as New Golf and New Jetta).
In other markets, the years when each platform's models were sold
may differ, and there may be additional models, or lack of some
models.

To clarify, although the A1 Rabbit and Jetta ended in 1984, the A1-based
Scirocco continued until 1988, and the A1-based Cabriolet continued
until 1993.
>> a2 = Golf (1985-1992), Jetta (1985-1992), Corrado <<
To be more specific, I believe the Corrado was sold in the model years
of 1990 through 1995. The "1995" models were actually left-over 1994
Corrados, some of which had airbag(s) added to them!
>> a3 = Golf (1993-1999), Jetta (1993-1999), Cabrio (1993-current) <<
Actually in the USA we didn't get the A3 Cabrio until the 1995 model
year. And if you follow VWoA's terminology, the GTI should be listed as
a separate model from the Golf.
And in addition to the A-series, there's also the B-series:
B1 = VW Dasher (1974-1981), also Audi Fox (1973-1979)
B2 = VW Quantum (1982-1988), also Audi 4000 (1980-1987)
B3 = VW Passat (1990-1994)
B4 = VW Passat (1995-1997)
B5 = VW Passat (1998-present), also Audi A4 (1996?-present)
BX = VW Fox (1987-1993), based on the B1 and B2 platforms
What about the Santanas made in Shanghai, China? Are they B1's, B2's,
or what?
They look a lot like b2 cars. The Santana 2000 cars look like
b3 cars with a different grille.
Why would you make things so confusing? When I first started
reading this group I assumed that A1, A2, A3 was somehow related
to the Audi models of those names.
Why use the same names as models of another closely related car?
> B5 = VW Passat (1998-present), also Audi A4 (1996?-present)
So you're telling me that the Audi A4 is a B5?
(my head is whirling)
