I have a 91 Jetta, 140k with a mint body. What I would like to do is put in a
Lower Gear Ratio.. Currently at 80mph it turns around 3,900.. I am not sure
what the final drive ratio is currently but I've heard that there are
aftermarket gear boxes that would be more efficient .. Has anyone done this
type of conversion? Thoughts? Recommendations? How about a 6spd Box?

thanks..

Hmm. If your tires are standard size, this works out to a 0.84 5th assuming
a 3.67 final as on pretty much every gasoline A2. According to Mr. Bentley,
your actual choices were: 0.91 (for a 16v), 0.89, or 0.75. My 16v GTI had,
of course, the 0.91 and would be going 75 at 4k (both needles straight up).
Then I got a 0.75 6th gear and now 4k is slightly over 90 - or so I assume
from my Excel spreadsheet gear calculator :) Aha! Perhaps you have an
automatic, which is a different Bentley chapter...1.00 3rd, 3.41 final
which gives 72 @ 3900. No, that's not right either.
Here we go. ECO diesel: 0.75 5th, 4.25 final gives 77 @ 3900.

Ok, the diesel has the same tranny case as the gas cars, just different
ratios. So in theory you could indeed get a sixth gear, but I believe 0.75
is about as low as those go, except I heard of a 0.71 in some Scirocco box
- not covered by my Bentley, anyway. I personally would be worried about
having enough power to push a taller gear, it being a diesel. If you get
the taller gear you might end up going slower.

But hey, you can call my favorite 6-speed guy. Vince Locicero, VL
