Having cold start problem with my 82 Rabbit, (CIS fuel injection).
Starts, runs for less than 5 seconds, then quits. Bouncing the throttle
sometimes get RPM high enough so it won't die, but still can hear sudden
lowering of RPM. Sounds like the switch is turned off after a few
seconds following each start and engine dies. Once engine warms (2 or 3
minutes of this starting and stalling in warm climate, longer in cold),
it starts and runs fine. Replaced Thermo Time Switch - no help. Cold
Start Injector turns on and sprays in even pattern, although it doesn't
stay on for more than a couple of seconds, according to VW chart this is
okay. Auxiliary Air Regulator working fine with changes in temp. Any
suggestions? Thanks in advance!

S,

Check all intake rubber plumbing for vacuum leaks (tears etc.). Check and
replace injector seals if they are hard like rock.. get some carb cleaner
and clean out the idle passage, do this by removing the idle adjustment
screw on the throttle body and spraying into the hole. Those passages clog
with carbon over time making idle real erratic.

Does it have O2 sensor? If so, classic symptom of thermo switch not keeping
O2 system in open-loop until sensor warms up.

Did you replace the thermoswitch in the hose that comes off the back
of the head? This switch afffects cold starts by disabling the oxygen
sensor loop for two minutes or so. You can use a paperclip to bypass
this switch to see if your car starts better. The thermoswitch at the
front of the engine is related to the fifth injector which seems to be
working fine.

Check your differential pressure. Sounds as if your control pressure
regulator (warmup reg.) has quit. Hope this helps.
