I've seen quite a few Carats. I even know an owner, so... since I live in the
US.. I'm ASSuming they were imported here too.

Only the earlier carats had all of the extra options. In 1989 (I think) VW
took out most of the extras in order to lower the cost. They did that
throughout the model line at the same time.

Um, Ted, with all due respect, just because *your* Carat doesn't
have all the goodies doesn't mean the other guys are wrong, because
they are not wrong at all. The Carat designation offers different
items on different years, yours is only one of the trim levels this
model came with, and yours is one of the lesser equipped of the
short-lived Jetta Carat line. The Wolfsburg packages are a similar
story, different years came with different options as standard.
What an 87 has is not the same as what an 89 has, but they're
both still Wolfsburgs. You need to learn about *other* years of
your own model if you want to be an expert and yell at folks :-)
The world doesn't revolve around *your* Carat ya know.... (kidding !)
The 87-88 Jetta Carat was a *fully loaded* luxury version of an
8v Jetta GLi. A gal-pal of mine has an 88 (well, had one) and
i "know it inside and out" cause i usta work on it sometimes
and i drove it many many times. It was a very nice special edition
metallic champagne green and has a nice light green all-cloth
interior. It's a very bitchen Jetta ! I was there when she bought
it in 1987 at Santa Monica Volkswagen in California.
It came from the factory with *every* power option: power windows &
doorlocks, power mirrors, MFA, excellent fully-bolstered sport seats,
rear headrests, leather steering wheel / shift boot / e-brake handle
/ and shift knob, great-sounding premium multi-speaker stereo,
cruise control, Wolfsburg Digifant 105hp engine, dual outlet GLi
exhaust manifold, close ratio GLi transaxle, 4-wheel GLi disks,
full-on GLi sport suspension, and very nice 14x6 Carat alloys.
The 89 Carat lost most of these goodies and most 90 and 91's were
basically pretty GL models with rear drum brakes, flat front seats,
terrible single outlet exhaust manifold but nice paint and rear
headrests. The only "good" Jetta Carat is the 88, the rest
weren't anywhere near as fully equipped.

Thats quite a bit like my gone but not forgotten CDN model '86 Carat
(my first VW...sniff...). Only thing that was different was that it
was a CIS-E engine (102hp)...the oddest thing that I found about the
car was that considering it had EVERY power gizmo know to man at the
time, it didn't have a power sunroof (just the crank)...oddly enough
all the features many people go on and on about in the A3s were on
that car...the rear defroster activated the heated mirrors and heated
washer nozzles (that was kinda neat in the middle of january)...heated
seats were great when they weren't broken...etc. etc.

I guess my '87 Carat with 4 wheel disks, MFA and heated seats is just
an aberration?
