When I got my '84 GTI (new), I was told it meant:
"Grand Touring Injected".

First, a question. What makes you think the three letters 'GTI' stand
for anything in English?
The term 'GT' was first used way back to describe sports saloons. It
stood for Gran Turismo - that's Italian.
The sporting Golf orginally had a 1588cc Audi engine but the 100bhp it
produced was...well, just too little. Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection
was added, gave it an extra 10bhp.
The Italian for injection is 'Iniezeione'. Add that to GT and you get
GTI - write it in German and you get GTE (the German for injection being
'Einspritzung') so, if you want to be 100 per cent correct about what
GTI stands for, think Italian not English.
BTW - Maserati used the letters GTI first, on its 3500GTI coupe which
had Lucas fuel injection.

In a documentary about the Golf GTi they stated that the nickname for the GTi
was: Grand Theft Item. It had this nickname in England a few years after the
first GTi's were launched. Because of the fact that is was a very popular car
everybody wanted to drive. Any VW with GTi on it was stolen.

For years I have been wondering what GT and GTI stand
for. On certain cars nothing. On the VW GTI, not "GTi", the
letters DO have a meaning in English. Congrats, Clint, you're
the only person who got it right.
Drum roll please. The true meaning of the letters "GTI" for
the VW model only, are "Grand Turismo injection" (whatever
the hell that means!).
This is an interesting tidbit I picked up in the August issue of
European Car, which has several articles celebrating "20
Years of the GTI" (see column 1, para 2, page 103).

The GT tradition originally comes from Italy. Ferrari badged their
really sporty models Gran Tourismo. However, this fell into disrepute
in the early seventies when every manufacturer threw a big engine in
their family saloons and slapped a GT badge on it. The GTi rescued the
sporty tradition and you can't put the GT badge on your car without
risking unfavourable comparisons. The "i" is indeed for injection.
Mercedes are more Teutonic and use "E" which is short for Einspritzung.

The GT comes from Italy, but not from Ferrari. It was first employed by
Lancia, when they still built cars and not FIATs, in the '50s for the Aurelia
B20 GT. It stood for "Gran Turismo". GTI would stand for "Gran Turismo
Iniezione", but they tell me VW is Deutsch, right? So they should' ve badged
it GTE indeed...
I do not know who used GTI the first time... Mr. Pipes says it was Maserati on
the 3500... sounds new to me...

AHA! I've been waiting to weigh in with my two cents. They should have
called it GTE. However, a german car manufacturer already had that
acronym. None other than Audi. So to prevent confusion VW went with
GTi using the italian for injection.
