are there any issues with painting plastic.

I just bought a new bumper cover for my car (big bumper)
and need to paint the smooth part white to match my car..
I thought of using that plasti-kote car color paint to
match it to my car... are there any issues that wouldn't
make this work well?

any help would be appreciated.

thanks

The only problem I could see with using plasti-kote is it's ability
to flex. This is especially important if you are planning on painting
the bumper, then installing it. I recently had my bumpers ( small
A2 style) painted. The guy used a lot of flex agent in the paint, and
it still flaked and cracked, and this is with the bumpers already on the
car. I would definitely test the paint on something before you go ahead
and spray the entire bumper because it's king of a bitch to get multiple
layers of paint off once it has dried.

Cheers,
Pat

whew, so you drive like a korean girl and hit everyones bumpers when you
park(no pun) and you wanna blame the paint and your body man?

dont bump anything and your bumpers will not need any attention for life of
car

besides modern 2 stage paint already is flexable enough that there is no
flexagent used

I replaced my bumper, and painted it with epoxy spray paint,
works GREAT.

parts cost was around $10 including masking tape, and no
chips/flakes after 10.000 miles.

Be sure to clean it really well with alcohol or solevent first.

The Eastwood Automotive Company makes great auto restoration products and they have stuff especially for painting plastics.  Go to their web site www.eastwoodco.com.  The two or threee products you would want would be the plastic prep #52056Z, the sandless primer #52040Z, and then the plastic paint in a variety of colors #520xxZ (the xx is the color code that you need from the catalogue.)

I would recommend the eastwood catalogue as a good one to have just to keep one in the know as to what is out there for restoring and customizing cars.

I am getting ready to paint my door handles to match the body color (alpine white).  I am going to get the products from my local paint shop though, because he has them, and i want to do this ASAP.

good luck painting the bumpers.
