I had my local dealer locate a New Beetle for me, and instead of a GLX,
they found a GLS with all the options. Is there a difference? Should I
hold out for a GLX?

Thanks!

GLX has the 1.8L Turbo gas engine, leather seats, sunroof, alloys, and
automatic transmission by default.

Make sure the GLS your guy found has the Turbo engine and all the other
stuff-- if that's what you want. When you look at the car, if it doesn't
have the black automatic spoiler over the rear window, it's not a turbo.
The engine cover also says "Turbo" on it.

I've dealt with at least three dealers (on both the East and West coasts)
who don't know the difference in the Beetle models between the "Turbo gas,"
"Turbo Diesel," and "non Turbo gas" engines, so if your guy is talking
options, be sure he knows what he's saying about the model of the car
overall.

You get an extra oil change in the base warranty (@ 15K) with the Turbo,
because you have to change the oil every 5K miles. The 2 liter GLS doesn't
get that extra service (the GLS 2.0 gets service at 5, 10, 20)- some dealers
don't know the 1.8T gets it for no charge at 5, 10, 15, 20... because some
are not familiar with the various model differences.

If it is a 1.8T with all the options then they are identical except for the
rain sensor wipers. And of course the price is also the same.

According to VW's website, the GLX has "all of the features of the GLS" plus
power sunroof (well, my GLS has that...), speed-activated rear spoiler (my
GLS has that, too...), heated windshield nozzles, leather wrapped steering
wheel, leather trimmed interior, heated leather seats, and 16" alloy wheels.

I LOVE my GLS turbo 1.8!

I looked at it yesterday and it said, "Take me home!" How could I
refuse? It had everthing I wanted except the 17" wheels and the CD
player. They'd already put on 17" wheels and were doing the CD player
that afternoon. I hope to pick it up tomorrow. (If the bank holiday
doesn't mess me up!)

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

I have a 2001 GLS TDI Jetta.... I REALLY wish I could have gotten a GLX TDI.
I got the GLS with EVERY option I could get except leather (which I had
installed immeadiatly after I got it), and the CD player (which I have
installed a MiniDisc player anyhow). Despite having every option, I missed
out on the power seats, auto rainsensor wipers, climate control (man I
really wanted that one) and I think a couple of other things.... fog
lights... them too.

GLS and GLX are not the same for Jetta... I'd imagine same holds true for
Beetle- so don't believe it if someone says so...

Get a turbo-diesel anyhow.

I checked out the VW website very carefully, and according to it, the
only thing you can't get on a GLS Beetle is the auto rainsensor wipers.
(Then... the Beetle doesn't have the climate control or the power seats
even on the GLX.)

I'm pretty sure there is no such thing as a GLX TDI Jetta. As far as I know,
the GLX Jetta comes with one, and only one engine: V6.

If we knew what we were doing it would not be called research, would it?
