I am going to be doing a swap for my 88 FOX GL w/4 speed standard.

I'm wondering if anyone has experinece with this and/or anyone knows

just what type of engine I can throw in there.

Anyone with an engine for sale in the Northeast U.S. (I'm in CT)
let me know...

thanks,

RoSS

Ross,

As most of the people here will tell ya, you can take just about any
8v motor & place it in there. I've got a mildly done up 8v GTi one in
mine but haven't gotten around to placing the knock sensor on it yet.
The 2 liter Audi motors are also potential swaps too. I just recently
had a 5speed tranny dropped in (from another fox), and it was well
worth the expense.

I put a Techtonics 2.0 L big valve in my 87 2dr. This is the Audi
style short rod motor. Lots of torque even from 1500 rpms.
I stuck with the 4 speed as much for monetary reasons as anything.
The Fox 5 speed seemed a little tall ratio for the money. I'm sure it
offers a little more acceleration in 1st and second, but 5th seems way
to tall. I would like a 5 speed with 5th about where the 4th is on
a 4 speed. If any one knows which Audi Box... Anyway with the
2.0 I don't miss 5th too much. If anyone has before and after times,
I could be convinced about the Fox 5 speed, it is the quick swap.

...then TR kicked his 2 cents in...

I too was originally trying to locate a 2.0 (used one) and couldn't
find a quality (low miles) engine so I had a 1.8 one rebuilt. In
looking back...I wish I would've had a 2.0 built up instead (although
I'm not sure of how significant the difference would've been vs. the
costs). Anyhow, I myself dig the 5 spd. since I drive the freeway
everyday & can cruise @ 70mph or so & turn around 2300rpm. There's
only a few hundred (about 250 - 300) rpm difference between 4th & 5th,
but you really can hear the difference when say the motor is turning
3k vs. 2.5k. In terms of accelerating, I'm finding that I can now
just leisurely accelerate briskly and not have to wind the motor out
whereas before (w/ the tall 2nd gear in the 4sp.) I always seemed to
have wrapped it out.
