I was looking at the Autotech catalog the other day and in the engine
section they had 2.1 conversions for the stock 2 liter blocks, including
the 9A (2 liter 16v), ABA (US crossflow), 2E (european a3 8v) and a 3A.
What engine is this? To my knowledge, the only 2 liter engines VW has
made in the US market are the 9A and ABA.

Engine code for the VR6 in my '92 Corrado SLC is AAA...
Maybe that is what they were refering to by mistake
(obviously wouldnt be a 2.1 liter kit for a VR6)
Was it ungodly expensive?..If so it more than likely
was the VR6.;)

The 3A block is the 2.0 8v block used in the Audi 80s, 90s and
is actually a VW bubble block. I don't think it was used in VWs
in the U.S., but perhaps in Europe?

I believe that the 3A is the Audi 2.0l engine.

They refer to the 8V 2L found in some Audis.
I got two. One in my 79 GTI and the other going
in my 82 Cabriolet.

I previously had a 3A (out of a '90 Audi 80) in my '82 Cabby. Very
torquey motor. With a stock head/cam the torque curve is basically flat
with good fuel economy - better than the stock 1.7l on the freeway.
Pistons are a bit heavier than those on the A3 blocks and rods are
shorter (Audi type w/standard length like the 1.8 rods). Crank is the
same as A3 except without provision for the motronic pickup.
As far as I can tell 9A and 3A blocks are identical - just different
intermediate shaft I believe and pistons - can look it up on the fiche
if you want. CR for the 3A is 10.4-10.5:1. Both A3 style and 3A use
the same intermediate shaft distributor gear type.

The later A3 (ABA) block revs somewhat better but not by much due to the
longer rods. The 3A will go into A1s a little easier since its the same
height as the standard VW block. I had to do a bit of pounding on my
rain tray overhang to get extra clearance for my throttle body cable on
my Cabby. The taller block also necessitated the Techtonics A3 into A1
long style downpipe.

Hope this helps,
