(Hope the link works)
It’s a MT2261 timing light with inductive pickup & tach display. Retail
price is £290 + vat (£340 incl!!) & I got it for £15! He was asking £20
initially, but I managed to get him down ;-)
Would anyone happen to have access to an instruction book for the above, or
perhaps a link to a site with info & details on how to use one?
Now, forgive me if this sounds stupid, but for a Digifant Golf Gti I believe
the timing is set at 2 – 2500 rpm? So would you connect the + & - crocodile
clips to the battery & the inductive clip to lead no 1 (closest to timing
belt end?) then gradually apply throttle until the display shows the correct
rpm? Seems like you need 2 pairs of hands (hold light, apply throttle, turn
dizzy & tighten dizzy mounting)?
On my dads old Gunson Timing Light, the inductive clip needed to be clipped
on at a certain direction, pointing towards the sparkplug if I remember
correctly. There doesn’t seem to be a mark on the Snap On one, but can
someone confirm this?
What are the increase & decrease advance buttons (I presume the display will
show the timing degrees as well as rpm). I’ve set the timing on my old 1.6
Golf Driver before, but since that was set at idle it was fairly
straightforward
Apologies if these questions seem stupid, but I’m not that familiar with
timing my Gti – normally the local garage sets it on the Krypton tuner for
me, but since I’ve got this bit of kit now, I think I’ll try it myself next
time & save a few quid!
Thanks for any advice
A chuffed car booter

This link is ridiculous and very difficult to cut and paste. Try using
www.makeashorterlink.com to create a usable size link so we can
see what you see.
And please don't crosspost!

Disconnect and plug vacuum advance (if you have one) Connect as you
guessed above, inductive clip goes any way around. Snap on should
show in display until you start engine. Turn off strobe light (to
save tube) display should show either 0 or engine speed. press rpm
button to toggle between advance or rpm. press increase till display
shows 2, turn display back to rpm, switch on strobe light. Point at
timing marks. Increase engine speed either using an assistant, a
throttle pusher or a spare hand till rpm reads as required, look at
timing marks, the TDC mark should be lined up at the required speed.
If it is only a degree or two out (which can be checked with the
increase decrease buttons then leave it alone. Any more and adjust,
recheck.
When right disconnect everything and reconnect advance tube.
