Has anyone had good success converting an '87 Vanagon to an in-line
4-cylinder engine in the Bay area?

Thanks,
Neil

You might do better with an Audi inline-5. VW in South Africa uses
them in the "Bus" (our Vanagon), still in production so perhaps
someone out there sells kits to convert one (mounts, electronics,
etc.?). See http://www.vw.co.za

Someone on the internet also has info about putting a Subaru (2.2?)
engine in a Vanagon too. Try a few searches with one of the search
engines.

It's actually fairly easy to do. You need to locate the bell housing of a
diesel vanagon, along with the oil pan and oil pickup. You can then use
most other VW 4 cyl. engines and they will bolt up. Injection becomes a
minor issue, nothing that can't be fixed though.

Get in touch with Detlev Hanschke (DeHan...@aol.com). I'm not sure
where he is in CA, but he's done an I-5 Audi conversion without
raising the deck lid. From the discussion on the Vanagon list
(van...@gerry.vanagon.com), he seems to know what he's doing and this
conversion promises to be all the rage.

If you get details from him, please post any results to
rec.autos.makers.vw.watercooled. :-)

I've been toying with the idea of picking up a Vanagon camper van and
putting in a TDI as a project for this winter. Will the new TDI engines
bolt up as well? Are they available?

Due to the wiring involved, this is a much more involved project.
The TDI is "drive by wire" and the wiring job will be more work.

TDi engines are available from wrecking yards, but they aren't
inexpensive ! I was quoted $2500 for one, with 10K miles.

Why convert??

With the wasserboxer I built, I have eliminated the head corrosion problem,
increased the Reliability of the engine (built to take 7000rpm ), increased
power and best of all INCREASED the mpg at 65 mph to 28.5 mpg THIS IS USA
measurements.
Why convert when you can get what is needed with a rebuild to my specs.
HP is an estimated 130 to 140.
