I have a Jetta, with the OBD port next to the ashtray. There are 8 pins used
of the 16pin SAE J1962 OBDII connector.
1:
2:
4: Ground
7: K-line
12:
13:
15: L-line
16: Vbat
Could anyone tell me what pins 1,2,12,13 are used for, or connected to???
Are VW's OBDII complient, since enven the new ones stil use the VAG1551 or VAG
1552 to diagnose ect, but the funny thing is that the VAg system also uses pin
7. Does this mean that the VAG's are using the ISO9141 protocol, or does the
obd just recognise whatprotocol it is connected to, and then uses that???

Stephan
Hi Stephan,
Here is HK and happy to find your message in this newsgroup,I'm
searching the Diagnostic software for VW engine :AAA ,ADY ,AGG but I'm
new in this topics.
Here is my question and hope that you can help me :
1-what is OBD ?
2-Does VW engine has OBD?
3-Is OBD exist on US's VW ?
4-Does Bently manual supply the electronic dianostic information?
5-Any books talking about this?
Would you tell me your experience about that.
Thanks very much indeed.
David.

before. I have the circuit diagrams and component lists for a VW/AUDI
Engine Fault code reader, plus a list of the codes and their meanings. If
you are able to "fly" a soldering iron, and can get your hands on some basic
electronic components, then you can make a reader for only a few pounds. I
developed this when I was at university and couldn't afford to buy one, so
if anyone is interested I can post the details.

Don't mean to jump StephanT, but here is some additional info to your
questions:
1-what is OBD ?
OBD is "On Board Diagnostics"
2-Does VW engine has OBD?
Yes, and for the Bentley manual I have, covering 1993 to 1999 Jetta's
and Golfs, have OBD or OBD II. OBD covers 1993 to 1995 VW models with
Montronic Engine Management Systems that can be diagnosed through fault
codes (Diagnostic Trouble Codes - DTC) by simply jumping two data link
connectors and watching the blinks on the Malfunction Indicator Light
(MIL) or referred to as the check engine light. OBD II is found on VW
vehicles with from 1996 to 1999, is second generation OBD system and was
integrated into all VW engines using Montronic 5.9 engine management
system sold in the U.S. Fault diagnosis with OBD II can no longer be
displayed via blink codes as on earlier models, but only through the use
of VW tool VAG 1551 or 1552.
3-Is OBD exist on US's VW ?
See above.
4-Does Bently manual supply the electronic dianostic information? The
Bentley manual does cover information on OBD systems. It tells you
where to jumper your connectors to retrieve the blink codes. There is
also a list of what the blink codes mean and possible corrective action
to take. For OBD II, you have to use the special tool listed above to
retrieve the codes or buy a OBD II scanner.
5-Any books talking about this? Bentley covers the aspects of the
system well, and if you have a OBD system and not OBD II, then you can
do diagnostics yourself. For OBD II information, Bentley covers the
basic information, and www.obd-II.com covers some more information.
Hope that helps.

Are you talking about building one for OBD systems and OBD II systems or
just the first one. I'd be interested if it covers OBD II systems, and
I have knowledge on building (small) electrical components. Thanks.

Is OBD the same as OBD I? I was under the impression that you could not
retrieve DTC on systems with OBD I by simply jumping the data link
connectors but I dont know this for a fact. I was at one time thinking
about purchasing the Carcomp VW Tool but due to the passing away of the
owner that product is no longer on the market. I would appreciate a more
detailed procedure of how to retrieve OBD I DTCs on a 95. I have a 95 VW
Passat with a VR6, OBD I. Also does the Bentley Jetta manual really cover
this "alternative tech" way of code retrieval, im my 95-97 Passat Bentley
manual they only cover this subject with use of the VAG scanners.

Both include all the software and cables you need. I'm debating getting
one because I'm not real fond of dealers, after having worked as a tech
for 3 different dealers. I know the shortcuts they take.

'97 GTI VR6
19,000 miles and counting
The Bentley Manual I have is the 1999 manual covering VW Jetta, Golf,
GTI and Cabrio, including the Jetta III, Golf III, VR6 and TDI. Years
covered, 1993 thru 1998 with early 1999 models covered. Not sure about
the manual covering the Passat, but I would not think it would be much
different when it comes to the diagnostic port.
OBD and OBD I, as far as I know are the same. OBD I covers 1993 to
1995, and you can access the DTCs through the VAGs or by jumpering the
data link connector(s) and interpreting the blink codes through the MIL
light. Now this is what it states for the vehicles I mentioned above.
It also states this for 1995 vehicles:
"On 1995 cars, a special OBD adapter may be stored beneath the rear
seat (attached to the wiring
harness) and shoult be used to access the DTCs. On cars with ABS, the
connector is stored beneath
the ABS coaxial cable next to the ABS control unit. On cars without
ABS, the adaptor is secured
by a wire tie."
It mentions this tool for late 1994 and early 1995 vehicles. That may
be why you manual does not mention it. Then again, this is what it says
for the manual I have, but it can't hurt to see if you have this
adapter, if your manual states you can't jumper the connectors to get
blinks codes on the MIL.
Hopefully that helps.

Second message regarding the below. You mentioned you wanted detailed
information on retreiving the DTCs. I can give you the information that
it lists for what vehicles are covered in my Bentley manual, but does
not mention the Passat VR6. Following the procedures in my manual for
your car, if your Passat happens to be different as far as the
diagnostic port, can result in damage to the ECM. Basically, its simply
jumping position (connector) number 4, top row with postion number 15,
second row, out of 16 total positions (connectors). Let me know if you
want to try it, and I will type up the 5 step instructions for you.
Later!

I too am looking for this thing.
Let me know if you find this someplace other than the dealer, and I will
let you know if I find it.
-alberT
I would say that would be the best bet. If you don't have the adapter,
and the Bentley manual mentioned it for earlier 1995 models, then you
might want to ask the dealership or if anyone else here in the newsgroup
knows anything about it or has information on it, it may surface. Sorry
the info didn't help you out.

There are 3 ways to get diagnostic codes from a VW or Audi.
1) Blink Codes (1989-95)
2) Rapid Diagnostics (digital ISO 9141 with VAG language 1988- )
3) OBD-II (digital with OBD-II SAE language 1996- )
Both 1 and 2 above are referred to as OBD 1. This was the first CARB
mandated On Board Diagnostic. CARB ruled that codes must be accessible
to everyone via a blink system requiring no special tools. This ran from
1987-1995. 1989 was the drop dead must have it year.
In 1988 VAG started using a more sophisticated digital information
system for communicating with their fledgling electronic transmissions
utilizing the ISO 9141 protocol and their own in-house language. You can
find this in the 096 and 097 transmissions.
In 1991 Audi started using this in their engine controller and VW
started in 1993. Soon they added SRS, ABS and other systems (about 28 at
last count). Actually SRS appeared in the Cabriolet in 1990, but that's
another story involving the Black Forest gang.
Now we come to 1996 and the mandate by the EPA to adopt new emissions
standards and techniques. In order to make it simple on the automakers
they made a standard, well really 4 standards of communication with the
cars engine controller (don't you just love committees).
1) SAE J1850 Pulse Width Modulation (PWM used by Ford) 41.6 Kbps
2) SAE J1850 Variable Width Modulation (VPW used by GM) 10.4 Kbps
3) ISO 9141-2 (Used by Europe, Asia and Chrysler) 5 Bps - 10.4 Kbps
4) ISO/DIS 14230-4 (Also known as EOBD or KWP 2000, which I believe is
so far only in one 1999 Volvo model) 300 Kbps maximum
Well VW already uses ISO 9141, so like all good Europeans :-) they teach
the cars a second language. Now VW speaks both the VAG parent language
and the OBD-II SAE J1979 language.
One thing to remember OBD-II is limited to emissions related powertrain
diagnostics which is only part (though a large part) of what the engine
can report concerning self diagnostics.

VWTool is still available, but currently only in the Professional
Edition called VDS-PRO. The original VWTool was a beta version of the
features John wanted in the Pro version intended for shops and dealers.
We should have a DYIer version of the VDS-Pro out in October.

Dana- You RULE!!!
I've been snooping on VWTool talking to my Passat & was befuddled
comparing my traces with the SAE & ISO specs I bought. It all makes
sense now- they aren't *using* J1979! VWTool wouldn't be able to
talk to the "central convenience" computer & radio if it only did OBD II,
but I guess there was no point in using OBD for the engine if it still
supported the old VAG protocol. He had to support that for older
vee dubs anyway....
I just grabbed the VDS-PRO update from your site. VWTool is missing
a couple of things- most notably the page where it displays a bunch
of engine parameters at once (it's in the manual, but my software
doesn't support it) instead of only 4 at a time in the "data
blocks." Going to try it tonight....
