I was just wondering what the tire pressure is supposed
to be on the stock tires. 32, 33, 34 psi

Does it not say on a sticker in the door jamb?

Time to read your owners manual, that's what it's for!

I looked yesterday and it said 26 psi on low load and 30 at max. This
seems awfully low to me. I have only heard of 32 being the low.

Who else has a 2003 Jetta TDI and has checked into the tire pressure?

If you don't believe the factory numbers then go with 32psi. But if you see
the centers of the tires wearing out faster then just reduce the PSI.

It isn't that I don't believe it. I wanted to know if other people
have experience with the tire pressure both with following the
gas door #'s and having them slightly higher. I was thinking I
was not reading them right.

I usually read the information written on the tires. My tires have a max
pressure of 45 psi. I usually keep mine at 36 for regular city driving, but
when I hit the interstate for a long drive, I kick it up to 43 for better
mileage.

But remember with a starting PSI of 43 after the tires get hot they are over
spec. Commonly hot tire pressure is about 4-5psi more.

I run 30-32 front, 35-37 back in the winter, and 28-30 front 32.5-34 back in
the summer, depending on load of passengers, and how the weather is suppose
to vary over the week (do it every sunday night after looking up the weather
networks report for my area).

The maximum pressure is for the maximum load. How often does your car
have 5424 lbs. of weight in it? 1356 per tire at maximum pressure
times 4 tires. Over inflated tires can wear out the enter of those
expensive tires prematurely and can cause undesirable handling
charateristics. Some performance driving instructors over in the tdi
or vortex have discussed the funky handling of overinflated tires.

Underinflation results in higher tire temperatures than overinflation.
That may aqppear counter-intuitive but it's true, nonetheless.

I wound up with 29 front and just over 30 in back and it seems to be fine. I
don't notice any sluggishness and the ride is ok. So, I think I found my
happy
medium.

Sounds good, if you carry some weight in the back (couple people in a
longish trip) top up the rears to maybe 32-34.

That max tyre pressure will only tell you what is safe for that tyre.
It has no relationship to your car's needs. I am not saying what you end up
with is wrong, but you are not using a meaningful number to establish the
proper value.

Actually the sticker is more likely to be right.

Your tires only display a max. No indicator of what the correct pressure is. Noob
