IMHO, if you are considering a Type 4 conversion, you gotta have that book.
Everything you need to know is in there.Well worth the money.

Mark,

I have a copy of it. In my unbiased, VERY CRITICAL opinion, his manual is
worth getting. I would get it before trying this conversion. You can do it
yourself without it, but one mistake costs more than that manual does!

For what it's worth, I am offering the manual at my new VW parts website,
and I don't carry stuff which I feel doesn't work or is even marginal in
it's operation, books included.

I WOULD NOT start a conversion without it. It is quite a reference source no
matter what method of cooling that you decide to use. And ditto everything
above.

I'd like to add a question to this thread. I've scored an inexpensive ( 2L )
Type4 motor and I'm considering loading it into a type3. Would Joe's book
benefit me ? I don't mind buying it if it would have pertinent info to me. I'm
going to "hot" this motor up a little and any info would help. Any of you type
4 people out there recommend any specific vendors ? Has anyone out there
attempted to put a T4 into a T3 ? I could use any advice I can get.

Thanks, Dan

intake manifolds -- that's my main stumbling block. I have dual 40 webers right
now that I'd like to continue using. Where do I get intake manifolds to do this
?

It's a bolt in EXCEPT for the cooling air boot. Get the plastic piece from a
T-4 WAGON and the T-3 air boot slips right on.

If you are putting them on a T-4 engine, European Racing has special
manifold for T-4 uprights.

I almost forgot , the Manual will help in the Clutch, flywheel area. Check
out the site http://home.att.net/~NEXTGEN and if you would like more info I
will mail you loads. '

Thanks Scott. I will be sure to mail you the $5.00 you requested to say
that. KIDDING!!!!! I can't say I mind selling Manual, but I have been
trying to let people know there another way for aircooled performance other
than T-1 and a T-4 engine is not as expensive as we have been told
especially when it has double the life of a T-1 when put in a light car like
a Bug or Ghia.
Thanks again.

Hay Mark, I do the same thing when ever I am going to spend any of my money.
Also I take criticism very well actually I encourage it !!! The more more I
find out about T-4's the more I learn, the more mistake people find in my
manual the better the next edition will be., I don't come close to knowing
it all but with the help of all the specialists in the manual, I believer it
is the best source available.
If I can help email me.

I'm sure he doesn't mind.. Joe is a great guy, and his manual is a MUST
for anyone converting a T4 to upright. I have it, and it is my treasure.
Very well written, clear pictures, even *I* can understand what to do
without reading twice. Some tricks that you really should know, but
propably will miss without the manual. I definitely recommend.

The works of Saint Muir are good for humor and for convincing people that
they can maintain their air-cooled VW themselves. When I first got my bug I
was given 3 copies and I would get pissed real fast trying to find real
information in the "Idiot's Guide" Later I read it for humor and wondered
what the hell that guy was smoking. ;-)

Tony I don' t want to toot my own horn but In the second issue of FLAT 4
magazine in England they did a two pager on the manual. The gave me the
best compliment I have ever gotten about the manual. They wrote " If you
know John Muir's Complete Idiot Guide, well The Type IV Upright Conversion
Manual is the other Bible" , I Don't agree my manual is no way as varied and
in depth and I did study his skills as to what I wanted to accomplish.. But
I guess when it comes to T-4's it is the best source for information.
If you would like the article let me know and I will send it to you. It was
in their Bug Mail section they call the section DR. SPITZEN FAHATS.

I was able to fix T-3 fuel injection with that book and a ohm meter. I like
how he explains how to disarm the choke.

We'll have to agree to disagree on the "Idiot's Guide." I have always been
disappointed on the lack of real information in it.
