Anyone know a good source to try and find out what part number 311905861A is
supposed to go to. And why would it be in my 72 Super? No where on the net
have I been able to lock it down whether it is a Bug or Bus switch. No
online catalogs have the part listed. My new lock and ignition switch do not
fit and the steering wheel lock itself does not work when they are placed
together.

I have reached my wits end, and any help would be appreciated. If it works
I'd like to drive it to VW Meltdown in Montgomery.

I have not been able to find where that 311 905 861A part number goes to. I did find 311 905 861
with no letter as being the 'steering lock w/ignition starter switch' for the 1600TL type3 from 8/66
to 7/67.

Your super is a 1302/1303?
If yes, then the steering lock should be part number 111 905 851N up to vin 134 2358 021
and ignition switch part number 111 905 865F from vin 112 2000 001 to 134 2358 021.

The A signifies that that is an updated version of the part number.
Interestingly enough, Dr. Porsche also designed the part numbering system
which Volkswagen still uses to this day.
